Organizations such as Broward Sheriff’s Office, Families Against Mandatory Minimums and the Coalition to End Homelessness, are concerned with the effects nonviolent offenders entering our costly jail and prison facilities.
The aim is to reducing the number of nonviolent, petty offenders being sent to prison and instead effectively and safely divert them into progressive diversion programs. This is done through collaboration with legislators, the judiciary, law enforcement, advocacy organizations and ex-offenders.
Last year (2008) at the Alternatives to Incarceration Summit, supporters and speakers included
Elected Public Defender Howard Finkelstein, State Rep. Joseph A. Gibbons, and State Rep. Perry E. Thurston, Jr.
