Amnesty International, the Nobel Peace Prize recipient in 1977, is an international, non-partisan, non-profit organization working for the worldwide protection of human rights. We have over 2.2 million supporters, activists and volunteers in over 150 countries. Amnesty's work to end grave human rights abuses includes:
*The release if Individuals at Risk: the aid of prisoners of conscience and other individuals at risk.
*USA Death Penalty Abolition Campaign.
*Demand Dignity: works to end the human rights abuses that are cause and consequence of poverty.
*Counter Terror with Justice: works to stop torture and ill-treatment; close Guantanamo.
*Immigrant rights-immigrant detention.
Amnesty's Miami chapter, Local Group 248, is the only adult AI chapter in Miami-Dade, although we proudly acknowledge the excellent work of Miami's many high school and college chapters, and can help to form new ones. Our own group was founded in 1081 and has since worked on behalf of individuals who were imprisoned or who disappeared, in Zaire, Benin, Yugoslavia, Greece, South Africa, Burma, Uruguay, Peru, Egypt, Ethiopia, Saudi Arabia and elsewhere.
Through letter-writing campaigns, appearances in the media, press conferences and fundraisers Amnesty International-Miami is working for those who have suffered human rights abuses, and to inform the members of our community about human rights issues.
We ask you to join our work!
