Monthly Meeting - November/2013

  • November 21, 2013 · 7:00 PM

November's topics are Vagrant and Puppet!

Our speaker will be Jelrik van Hal and he'll tell us all about making Vagrant and Puppet work for your project.

The meeting will be sponsored, for the first time, by our friends at EyeOpen.

19:00: Welcome Drinks
19:30 - 19:45: Opening
19:45 - 20:45: "Environments, line up! Vagrant and Puppet 101"
20:45 - 21:00: Closing & Raffle
21:00: Social, drinks and food.

Talk: "Environments, line up! Vagrant and Puppet 101"

Cut on the time you and your whole team spend on setting up a development environment for every new project. Take away the differences between your development systems and the production machine. Get rid of all the different PHP versions on your local machine. Vagrant and Puppet help you standardize and isolate the software you need to run your application in development mode.

When leaving this session, you know how to keep your development environment clean and standardized through your team. And with any luck, you’ll do the same as I do: fire up a Vagrant box for every project you work on!

Speaker: Jelrik van Hal

Jelrik van Hal is a Software Engineer at Ingewikkeld. He is a community enthusiast, long-time enabler at and event manager for PFCongres . Although his experiences take him far and wide, Jelrik specializes in data architecture, REST APIs and Symfony development. Jelrik loves to work with the best tools out there and makes a habit of refining and renewing his toolkit every day. Vagrant, Puppet, PHPStorm, Composer, Capistrano, Git and Github are just some of the tools of the trade that he came across. He tweaks them and incorporates them into his daily work.

The Venue

EyeOpen is located in Pand Noord. You can reach it quite easily by taking bus 32 or 33 from Central Station, or by taking the ferry to IJ-plein and walking for 15 minutes. More instructions here (in Dutch).

Please keep your RSVP up to date, and we hope to see you there!

It was cool, and since we're using Vagrant at work, it was also interesting.
I'm more interested on provision through bash scripts, but I will give (another) try with puppet.

Last but not least, can't wait to see the slides online.

Keep up the good work guys, the meetups have been really good and trigger some interesting discussions.

If you like bash scripts, stick with ansible it will be more readable and easier for you then puppet.

Today was my first time attending a meeting like this; I have been in this line of work for ages but have never been much of a community-go'er. Sacha invited me to come join the meeting, and since I had nothing planned, why not?

I was feeling a bit awkward in the beginning but as the evening progressed I felt more and more at home. The vibe was very positive, open and friendly, and I really enjoyed it. So thanks for that everyone, and the organizers, eyeOpen and Jelrik in particular.

The Vagrant/Puppet talk was well structured and provided a clear introduction to the different components involved in the setup, how they work together, and what advantages that brings us.

And of course, the raffle was a blast ;)

I'm actually from the city of Arnhem myself and only temporarily based in Amsterdam, so sadly I will only be able to attend one more meeting. But suffice to say the experience was very pleasant and I will try my best to get a spot for the next gathering ;)

    Thanks guys!
