AB February Meetup - Let it Snow!

  • Feb 5, 2014 · 6:00 PM

Welcome to Analyze Boulder 10!

Scotty Nelson will present on practical issues in implementing a recommendation engine for a customer loyalty program.

Josh Montague will share examples of how major events appear in the data from Twitter's firehose and how they can often be classified and modeled analytically.

Jay Swartz will present "Heuristics - Exorcising the Demons of Unbounded Reality; a brief overview of the significance of heuristics for human cognition and data analysis. "

And Chris Thorne will give an overview of Built With Data - a new data blog for Analyze Boulder members, focused on data statups, products, analysts, & tools.

And as always... great beer on tap from Kettle & Stone.

Thanks for all the great questions! Here's a link to my presentation: http://bit.ly/AB-Pulse

And are you treating N as a known variable or a random variable as well? The sum of N exponential RV with rate of lambda, is just gamma(N, lambda), iff all the n exponential RVs are identically and independently distributed. So, if N is known, then wouldn't you just need to estimate one parameter, lambda, or beta as in the second equation, instead of 2 parameters?

Are you also assuming every one has the same rate of sharing (so all the exp RVs are identically distributed) and no one shares more than once (so all exp RVs are independently distributed)? If they are not iid, then the sum of those non-iid exponential rvs would not be a gamma rv. The first moment of the sum would be the same as a gamma rv but the moments afterward wouldn't necessarily be the same if they are identically but not independently distributed. And I'm not even sure what the sum would be distributed if they are not identically distributed.

Hello! Glad you asked. We just uploaded a snazzy flyer above but the direct link is http://goo.gl/7SeoAG.

I wanted to let know know about GoCode Colorado, an apps challenge for Colorado open data. Here is the link: http://gocode.colorado.gov

The GoCode team did a nice job presenting at BDNT tonight. They might also enjoy presenting at the next AB.

Thanks Brian. We've booked way out, so we'll have to think about how to fit them in, assuming they're interested.

Is this the revised, final, lineup?

I saw the earlier emails about speaker changes and wasn't sure if this was the updated lineup.

Ah... yes this is it! Hope to see you tomorrow.

Looking forward to Wednesday's Meetup. I just started a weekly newsletter focused around Civic Tech which has a lot of overlap with Analyze Boulder. I would love suggestions/comments. http://ctechdigest.com
