Heart 'n Lunger Hike-Penguin Peak

Heart 'n Lunger Hike
The Heart 'n Lunger hikes will be every Tuesday evening May - September. We have done them every year since 2007. H 'n L hikes, by our definition, gain at least 1500' of elevation. Many of them will offer 2x that elevation gain for the uber-fit among us. Distance and time: 3-4 miles in 3-3.5 hours.  At the other end of the fitness spectrum, the less fit in the group have good naturedly dubbed their sub-group the 'Gaspers 'n Wheezers'. Everyone is welcome these hikes are mix with 'out and back' and " Loop"

Penguin Peak topo map

Hike to Penguin Peak (4305 ft) next to Bird Ridge. Total elevation gain, 4200 ft, 6 mile RT (Red Line).

This is difficult and steep trail, gaining 4200 ft in just 3 miles!

Meet at the Konikson road parking lot in Indan, in Bird, right after the old Bird Creek parking area. After briefly following the old jeep road for about a half mile you take a right and then start heading up, steeply, then very steeply. The trail is rough, and in a tunnel through thick brush for awhile. The trail takes off from the Bird Creek ORV trail about one-half mile in from the parking lot, and goes straight up an avalanche chute to tree line.  There is a microwave reflector on the ridge about 500 feet below the peak that is a good destination for people who don't want to go all the way to the top.

-- Ski/ trekking poles (optional but very helpful)
-- Wind &/or rain shell and pants
-- Dress in non-cotton layers so you can shed or add clothes as temps change
-- Water & trail snacks

OK. But it can be very windy

$5.00, or annual parking sticker

Nice workout!! 6.1 miles in 3:16 Min, total elevation gained, 4386ft!!! it was true Heart and Lunger hiking. Couldn't see anything at the top due to fog but it got cleared when I got to the ridge. Nice to followed ridge back down. Sorry, I was late and thank you Matt for leading the group.

I started the group because there wasn't any other type of group like this. I've met some great folks in the group who have become close friends and have also met some amazing business owners.
