It is Labor Day weekend! What better time to exercise and socialize before the snow flies! This Sunday let’s hike to Gordon Lyon, Rendezvous and Nipple Rock. From the Arctic Valley parking lot ($5 fee) we’ll trek up the trail on the right side of the creek to the saddle and from there go left to the top of Gordon Lyon, then back down to the saddle and up Rendezvous to near the ski-tow header and then out the ridge to Nipple Rock for lunch (you’ll be hungry by then). From the rock we’ll back track on the ridge to the vicinity of the header and from there there are (at least) three ways back to the parking lot. Those who want to climb to the very top of Rendezvous can do it on the way in or the way out. The nice thing about this hike is you can do one, two or all three and the way back is never in doubt (well, almost never).
10:00 AM: Meet at Carrs Muldoon inside coffee shop area to carpool; look for hikers.
10:15 AM: Depart for Arctic Valley.
11:00 AM: Start hiking. If coming from Eagle River or Mat-Su plan to be at the Arctic Valley parking lot at 10:45.
Estimated hike time is 4-6 hours. Be prepared; dress non-cotton layers; bring water, lunch, bear spray, and trekking poles (if you have them). Hopefully it won’t rain but there are no guarantees. The trail to the saddle will likely be muddy.
