Farewell to Alaska Hike - Bird Ridge

After living in Alaska for almost 12 years, I finally have to bid goodbye to this beautiful state. Everything I learned about outdoors, I owe it to Alaska and Alaskans. My experience in Alaska and with the Anchorage Adventurers Meetup enriched my life immensely.

Before I leave, I would like to organize my last event, a hike up to Bird Ridge. It is supposed sunny and warm on Saturday. Friends, old and new, please join me for this typical spring hike in Anchorage. I want to leave Alaska with a big smile on my face, knowing Alaska will open her arms to me when I am ready to come back.

Bring wind shells, kahtoolas, water and snacks. Parking is $5 unless you have the State Park sticker.

Thank you for all the well wishes and everyone showing up at the hike. I always love this hike no matter what the condition is. The snow flakes near the top added more charm to today's hike for me. It was great to see all of you once more before I go down to California. Please contact me when you are in the Bay area and I would love to reconnect with you all for adventures. Any yes, I may come back some day. Alaska is always in my heart.

Nice afternoon hike, and nice to see some faces I hadn't seen for a while!

Trail was a bit icy the first half mile or so, then mostly dirt as long as you stayed on/just to the South of the ridge.

Enjoy your road trip down Qianyu, and remember, you can always come back !!

Qianyu...I will be at the trailhead at noon with two others...bruce and larissa and maybe dennis too but they will be my escorts down the bike path instead. Others are welcomed to join us. We will be walking. I did promise treats for those to have at the top. I better get busy with making something. The group has swelled in size!!!! Yes, you will be missed. No doubt about that.

Qianyu - I wish you the best in your future endeavor! Remember our discussion on what to do about the city's $200 tickets at Glen Alps? Although we never reached closure on that subject, we also did not have to pay!!

Darn! I just got back to Alaska and lost one of my old Adventurer buddies. Wish I could be at the "sendoff" but have a competing engagement. I'll miss you but if I come to your area I hope I can make contact.

Will meet for the sendoff and will be with the slow, partial hike group but I am also bringing my bike to go on the Indian to Bird/Gird trail (or as much of it as is snow-free), as an alternative to the hike. Others are welcome to join me in this! If anyone wants to carpool from Carrs/Huffman let me know.

    Wouldn't miss it!

I will be there to start the hike with you Qianyu, but won't go to the top. I am a total chicken when it comes to trails that "are completely iced up and a bit sketchy!" (thanks for that, Bruce)

Will meet for the starting sendoff & shorter hike.

I'm working so I can't join this hike but wish you all the best in your new adventure. Thanks for everything you've taught me-especially about fiddleheads and how to slow down on backcountry skis-both of those things are handy to know.

I highly recommend the Kahtoola's recommendations. Was just up there yesterday also and there are sections on the trail that are completely iced up and a bit sketchy. You might be putting them on and taking them off numerous times but it's worth it (and an excuse to take a quick break).
