Wifi peer to peer will not go away, holds great promise and delivers new capabilities that deserve the attention of the developer community.
If anyone missed the project names or wants to get involved, the most vocal project is https://commotionwireless.net/
They were interviewed on Democracy Now and appear to have been originally funded with public money.
If you'd like to use a mesh network now, without rooting your phone, the people at ServalMesh have done an excellent job of minting an apk that just (f)ing works... if you know how you want to use it and can navigate their labyrinthine menus.
Open Garden and the Android Open Source Project itself are worth mentioning. Open Garden appears to have come from the grassroots directly and all of the mesh systems simply put an Android user interface on features the AOSP received downstream from The Linux Project. Which wants you to be able to phone home, even if you are E.T.
