Join us for Worldwide Anti-whaling Day 2012, which is Monday, Nov. 5th from 11:30 AM-1PM.
In 1986, the International Whaling Commission (IWC) placed a suspension on commercial whaling. This, however, has proved ineffective, for Iceland, Norway, and Japan fail to abide by the moratorium.
Not heavily enforced by the IWC, whalers have evaded the law by painting “RESEARCH” on the sides of their ships and claiming that as their purpose. The whalers have full intentions of selling the whale meat for profit and get by with minimal research to make their guise appear valid. With no end in sight, these countries have killed over 25,000 whales since commercial whaling was banned in 1986.
This year, despite the economic and human disasters caused to Japan by the earthquake, tsunami, and meltdown at Fukushima, the Japanese have announced they will again try to kill about 1000 whales in the Southern Ocean Whale "Sanctuary'" and plan on spending an additional $27 million to increase "security" for their evil whaling fleet against interference with their bloody task.
Please join us in letting the Japanese know how we feel about their illegal activities! We emphasize that it is the whaling we find so heinous, and do not intend to impugn the Japanese people as a whole---most of whom are innocent of complicity in this murderous business, as they are of the ongoing slaughter of dolphins and other small cetaceans in Japanese waters (some 23,000 a year).
So come on downtown if you can! Maybe we can do lunch after? Watercourse and City O City are not far from there!
Feel free to make your own signs, I have a few to share. Leaflets will be provided. There is an event sign up page also on facebook, if you want to sign up there as well:
