Hi. I'm Carol E. McCormick and I am fighting against the first ever proposed deer hunt in the City of Rockville for so many reasons.
First of all, I don't think most Rockville City residents even know about this. The White Tailed Deer Task Force issued a report after meeting for over a year. Rather than discussing science or alternatives, unlike the actual report which is less than one page and almost unreadable, at the presentation before mayor and council on 7/11/11 they talked almost exclusively about what kind of hunt to have. But you wouldn't know that unless you attended that meeting or watched the video of that meeting.
Besides any hunt being inhumane, we can easily refute the eager hunters' every argument with scientific fact. But this has become a political issue as our 3 councilmen have already stated, without hearing from the public, that they will vote for the hunt. One is trying to unseat our mayor who leans against the hunt. Another councilwoman leans for the hunt. We have elections the first week in Nov.
I wish you would tell the Gazette at [address removed] what you think by writing a letter to the editor; and send the same letter or a different one to [address removed]. If you could please send me copies, that would be great. Remember letters to the mayor/council must be received by them by 5:00pm on 9/9.
So far almost 1,000 people from around the world have signed my petition and I hope you will too no matter where you live. I understand it has caused quite a stir at city hall. http://www.change.org/petitions/save-rockvilles-deer-from-being-hunted is the link with more info.
I need to get the word out though to actual citizens within the city limits of Rockville. I have been on the front page of the Gazette, and had letters to the editor published, and write on facebook's Rockville Central page where they hate the deer; but this is not enough. Even Bob Barker has written to the mayor and council, and to the Gazette and Washington Post.
Because of this need to advertise, we have a chip in set up. So far $150 has been donated. I have been paying for everything myself and work on this alone 21 hours a day/ 7 days a week, but it's worth it to save the deer. Due to the petition, the Task Force will be at the mayor and council meeting on Oct. 24 for the final decision. It was scheduled for 9/12.
The public now has until 9/9 at 5pm to comment.
I would love to have an event before and during the meeting on 10/24. I will have some decent posters, a mascot will be there, and hopefully many of you and the press. We will have a small march, demo at City Council first, and then get our seats early for the meeting which starts at 7:00. Let's crowd that meeting. See a link here please https://www.facebook.com/event.php?eid=251478244872596 . Citizens can sign up in advance to speak for 3 minutes each. If we prepare properly, we can each have an index card with our statement timed to 3 minutes on it and go in order to make sense in what we present. Email me or friend me on fb.
LAST BUT NOT LEAST, I need citizens of the City of Rockville to be made aware of this and to sign a petition in person. I cannot go door to door, nor collect signatures at Montgomery College, or at stores because I am too disabled. I am hoping for about 200 signatures before 9/7. If anyone(s) can help out with this, I will try to pay you fairly from my own pocket.
Some major animal organizations are writing letters, and this may even become a law suit as has happened in my friends' case in NY. See CayugaDeer.org. They have a great website and have been working on this for years. As videographers, they are fortunate to be able to make videos and have gotten on the Jane Velez Mitchell show and have helped me a lot. They are facing a horrid net and bolt kill. WE DON'T KNOW WHAT WE ARE EVEN FACING. Probably hunters in trees luring deer with food and shooting them, or hunters with bows and arrows. How can the public comment when we don't know on what to comment? This is so unfair. And there are ways to keep deer off roads and away from plants. Of course citizens there in NY have funded a law suit. Some GWU law students are looking at this, and I hope other attorneys will as well. I think there is liability for lack of transparency by city government for starters. I cannot afford to pay attorneys so if someone knows anyone ......
Thanks so much in advance for all you do for the animals, and for reading this. I hope you will help. Paws are crossed.
