Dear Classic Book Club Members:
I am sending this public service announcement because as a lover of classic books, you know what a difference that reading skills have meant in your life. There is an opportunity to share these skills with others who need them.
You may be aware that the Detroit Public School students have extremely low standardized test scores. Research has shown that it is extremely difficult to intervene if a student is not at grade reading level at grade 3. So the Detroit Public Schools has started a volunteer tutor program, where volunteers go into the schools and tutor pre-K students in reading. Eventually this program will reach all students in pre-K through grade 3.
This program needs volunteers who can commit to one hour per week (which may be on Saturdays if unable to do it during the week). Volunteers are expected to attend a short training program, submit to a background check, and be fingerprinted and photographed.
Knowing what a difference reading has made in your life, this is an opportunity to make a difference in someone else's life. For further information or to sign up, please visit the DPS website: http://www.detroit.k12.mi.us/readingcorps/
There are also various articles about this program in today's Detroit Free Press: http://www.freep.com/article/20100207/OPINION02/2070426/1318/We-salute-4300-reading-volunteers
