Hiking Trails Less Taken: Wawayanda State Park - NJ Highlands

  • November 23, 2013 · 9:00 AM
  • Wawaynda SP Parking Lot

Join us for an 11-mile hiking adventure on several park loops in Wawayanda State Park named by the Lenape for 'winding water' or 'water on the mountain'. Trails are heavily wooded with mixed deciduous forests, white pine and hemlock forests; bogs, swamps, and a large lake that attracts a variety of birds. The terrain is less rocky and more level compared to typical North Jersey trails [mostly old woods roads]. We will skirt Wawayanda and Lookout Lakes and stop at Wawayanda Furnace. This will be an all-day activity; typically we are off trail around 4:00ish.  Bring sturdy boots, non-cotton layers, lunch, water, snacks and camera. As a precaution, WEAR ORANGE.  Meet at 9:00am - Clinton Road parking lot; P7 on NY/NJ Trail Conference Map #116 [GPS[masked], -74.407380], 7.5 miles north of Route 23. Heavy rain cancels, no dogs allowed. Optional after-hike refreshments at local eatery.

Thank you everyone who shared their supplies and for watching out for me. It was very much appreciated.

As an update.. My knees were better by later that evening and by the morning I only had one knee that has a very slight (almost non existent, unless I went down a stairs) twinge. And by mid-afternoon on Sunday there was no little to no pain. I did some research and think for a newbie, I have been carrying too heavy of a backpack, could get better hiking boots and poles.

I have ordered poles and a new backpack that will sit on my hips. I will not fill it too heavy next time. I am also looking to get better hiking shoes that fit my feet better and help distribute weight off of my knees. THAT and learning how to hike in a way that puts less stress on the knees.

I never really had any issues before when I was hiking 6 miles with no back pack, or a backpack with one bottle of water.

So, I guess I have lots to learn.. THANK YOU!!! to all that helped me and shared your knowledge..

It was so great to meet you, Cat. One of the main benefits of joining/hiking with a club is that you get lots of useful information and tips from experienced members. You are on the right track with what you wrote. Hope to see you again on another hike, with a lighter pack and sturdy boots. Best, Linda

Thank you all for sharing a beautiful day hiking through Wawayanda SP - wow! I just kept wondering how it must have been back when the furnace was going full blast with tons of activity on the woods roads we were exploring. Now it is all just a beautiful forest with an abundance of rhododendron and mountain laurel. The after-hike was great as well. Looking forward to many future adventures.

It was a nice hiking reunion with good friends. As always, Terry planned a great trip, complete with the first snow of the season!

Back on the radar, but at church for our annual "Pie Bake" that day ... Anyone interested in a homemade pie for Thanksgiving - apples peeled with love! :-)
