Blue Marsh Lake/Reading Phillies Baseball Hike

  • Jun 7, 2014 · 10:15 AM

Please join us for our 3rd Annual Blue Marsh Lake Hike/Reading Phillies Baseball Hike. This event starts with a 10-12 mile moderately paced hike around Blue Marsh Lake near Reading, PA. We expect the hike to finish around 3.30 pm. After that, we change/freshen up and drive to Hitching Post on Rt.183 in Leesport for an early dinner. After dinner, we go to nearby PPL Park for a Minor League Baseball game between Reading Fightin' Phils and the Richmond Flying Squirrels at 6.35 pm. There are also fireworks after the end of the game in the stadium. The price of the ticket for the baseball game is $9.00/each.

Last couple of years when we have done this event, it has been a lot of fun. Here is the link to the pictures from last year:

Here is all the information from John Garner:

For the third straight year, we have a Reading Fightin’ Phils Baseball Hike.  This year it takes place on Saturday, June 7.

The Hike:

11-12 mile lollipop hike at Blue Marsh Lake outside Reading,  PA.  Bijal will lead a group that wants to move faster, John will lead a moderate-paced group.  It
should take around 5 hours.  We'll probably start around 10:15. There are bathrooms at the Visitor’s Center if you want to change clothes.

The Post-Hike Meal:

The Hitching Post on Route 183.

2747 Bernville Rd, Leesport, PA 19533

 The Game:

Highlight of the Day! Minor League Baseball, featuring the Reading
Fightin' Phils against, same as last year, the Richmond Flying Squirrels at 6:35 PM. Our seats are the similar to last year, except we are directly behind home
plate in Section 5 in four rows with aisle seats. Fireworks after the end of the game! Tickets for the game are $9.00 each. Please note that once you sign up you must arrange to get your ticket from John Garner. Please use the email function on John’s profile on Meetup if you do not have his direct contact information.

We strongly recommend carpooling. Neither the Lake Road trailhead nor Nino's can accommodate 30 cars, and probably not even 15.  In addition, while there is plenty of parking at the stadium, the pre-game crowds make parking difficult.  Make it easy on yourself and share a car if possible. We will try to arrange a carpool from Oaks parking area for Fall/Winter Thursday evening hikes location at 9.15 am sharp (GPS:[masked], [masked]).

People, thank you so very much for joining the 2014 Blue Marsh Lake/Reading Phillies Baseball Hike. The weather was superb with low humidity and sunshine all day! We did 11.4 miles at a moving speed of about 3.0/mph and total up elevation of 1700 feet (Garmin). Everyone did great! Jason glad that you finally found the location and were able to join us. Len and Jen, thank you for sweeping. We had a total of 20 participants for the day. Fifteen joined us for the hike and 20 joined us for dinner and the Baseball game. Sitting on a patio for dinner at Hitching Post was great; we were able to see all the antique planes during the Air Show! Stella was great too! Game and Fireworks were entertaining as always. Sorry, we got to the game a bit late and missed Cheerleaders! . My sincere thanks to John for doing most of the pre-event work for this day. These things are always difficult to put together and a lot of effort goes into it. See you all on a future hike. - Bijal

Great hike, Bijal and John! The trail was very challenging at times. Dinner was very good. The baeball game was a lot of fun, even though I was very loud and rooting for the opposing team. It was a wonderful day for all 3 events and it was good hiking with everyone.

Also, in the future, I will take a more active approach to finding the meeting spot, instead of being passive and relying on coordinates.

The GPS coordinates were wrong. Look up Blue Marsh Lake. I hope this doesn't deter you from the hike.

Where is the trailhead? The GPS coordinates aren't right. Looking forward to it.

I guess no one is willing to carpool with me? I am coming from central NJ.

No, John has bought a bunch of tixx already. You need to pay John for your ticket. That's how it works. The earlier, the better. Don't wait until we get to the stadium!

I'm guessing we are buying tickets at the stadium? Can you just choose where you want to sit? Just wondering.

Last Saturday's AT hike was great. Looking forward to another fast paced hike. I wonder who is on the mound on Sat.

RESTAURANT CHANGE: We had to change the restaurant from Nino's, where we have gone in the past but which cannot accommodate us, to The Hitching Post on Route 183. Nino's is closer to the ballpark, but The Hitching Post is closer to Blue Marsh. We'll provide directions. We plan to get to The Hitching Post no later than 4:00.
