Winter Exploration Hike

Details

UPDATE: I have received a few conflicting reports about the conditions in Harriman. It looks like we maybe able to survive in Southern Harriman without snowshoes. If not, we'll put the strong people in the front and plow through or if you are strong and can break trail with shoes on, bring them. Hike is probably moving to a flatter area that gets more use. Meet in Suffern as planned. I will wait a few extra minutes but not too long as it will be cold. Dress in layers. No jeans, boots required. Hat required. Gaiters will come in handy in deep snow or fashion yourself a homemade pair. Conditions vary from place to place, so do not show up for anyones hike without required gear.

Let's explore Kakiat Park in Suffern NY. Hike will be 7 to 8 miles and will include a big climb. Pace will be moderate and leader will wait for everyone at the top of hills. Winter conditions prevail, at least today. Boots with waterproofing are mandatory. Microspikes or other traction aids might be mandatory. I will let you know. Dress in layers, rather than a heavy winter coat. Plan to be out until at least 3 pm. Bring lunch, water, extra layers including an extra pair of socks and gloves. Hike will go to areas rarely visited. Hike will go off maintained trails. Hopefully we will be able to find bear prints in the snow. If not bears, we will show you other critters. We will stop at points of interest. Drivers meet in Suffern, NY at the bus stop parking lost in front of Ole Ole restaurant, junction of Routes 59 and 202 at 9:00 a.m. Shortline bus #908 leaves Port Authority at 8:15 a.m.
