One of those jack-of-all-trades/master of none (blame waffling between humanities & sciences -- PhD/MS in science, almost MFA, M Journalism, BA in humanities/social sciences. Crossed Sahara 2x in regular Toyota van during time when Sudan more or less safe and militant Islam not yet flourishing in Sahel. Worked in Niger. Many adventures that deserve more than letter/email treatment but must get ass in gear. Have been in writers groups in and outside of schools but never non-fiction (took journalism to persuade me to change format, also when in school creative NON-fiction not option and barely getting off in other writing programs though of course John McPhee, others had been doing for years.
Have come out of insanity-inducing 7+ months living with dying friend. Dying I could and have handled, even estrangement from family, but not when also surrounded by her crazy friends (some also-live-in (and out)) and her beloved aging beagle, never housebroken, aggressive since adoption, who (likely sensing impeding death) started biting people, including me, home health care aides, vet tech! A bit like James Thurber's story, "The Dog That Bit People," presumably at least basically non-fiction memoir on his part. I've a very quickly written beginning draft on dog that I'll bring tonight. Think I should finish before moving on to the humans that bit off heads, stabbed in back, etc. But there was a lovely house wren who serenaded me for hours each day!
Former print reporter after all-but-thesis-project MFA creative writing. Switching to non-fiction because friends tired of long emails! (Also tried doc video but tripods too heavy!)
Hope revised version succeeds
