Ray Comfort is handing out DVDs of his terrible and dishonest film "Evolution vs God" at San Jose State. For any of you who are available at noon on a weekday, I would like to show support for the scientific viewpoint near those who are handing out the DVD. Just to be clear, we are NOT hindering the distribution of DVDs, we are merely voicing a reasonable scientific alternative viewpoint. This is not a protest, just the opportunity to promote actual science.

This was the post on Ray Comfort's site:
"Ray Comfort has produced another powerful video that debunks the myth of evolution. Help us get this into the hands of thousands of university students who are being taught the lie of evolution. Wednesday, October 16 we will be at UC Berkeley and San Jose State at noon to hand out free copies of the DVD and promo cards with a "QR Code" that allows smart phones to watch it free online. We need volunteers to help at both Berkeley and San Jose State and we welcome donations of DVD's and promo cards to be handed out. If you can help with either of these needs please contact us for more information"

    I have an idea.

Let's make our own video where we pose as the people giving away the DVDs. Show students happily taking all the DVD's we're giving out and us talking about how effective this is in spreading the news that Evolution is false and cannot be proven. Then right at the end of the video we pan the camera as the students walk by us, and show the students chucking the DVD's into an overflowing garbage can.

It seems that because Ham outed our intentions, the creationists did the DVD a day early and we missed them by 24 hours.

The only reason an organization like that would want to avoid us is because they fear we are correct. If they are confident in their position, they would have no issues with our presence.

      October 16, 2013

    • Kevin H.

I mostly agree with you but they also could just want to avoid a confrontation. Although it is extremely wimpy of them to be handing out a DVD that presents a controversial viewpoint, but then avoid people (us) who might well be better equipped to debate them than the average S.J. student.

I'll be there and I'll be bringing my bible! I'll also be taking one of Comfort's DVD but only because I want to watch it. My philosophy is that the best way to fight your enemy is to know and understand them.

I would suggest that later that same day we have a get together to watch the DVD and ridicule it. It will be great laughs I'm sure.

Here's an interview Hemant Mehta ("The Friendly Atheist") did with Comfort a couple months ago. I think it conveys Comfort's views pretty well.

Dominic, can you give a link to the interview that you refer to? thx

How long do you think they'll be there? I don't get off work until 2:30PM but I want to participate.

    October 15, 2013

    • Brian B.

I don't think it will go that long, but it depends how many DVDs they can hand out. If they start at noon, I assume they are going through the lunch hour and done around 1 or 1:30

I tried to find a small handout on the net to take but had no luck, so I designed a little flyer that you can print two to a page and fold. I uploaded it to files. Please comment on it and use it if you want to.

May I recommend this link to free HHMI educational DVDs about evolution and its "controversy". Maybe we could order a bunch of these DVDs to give away or just distribute cards with the link on them. I would also like to recommend contacting the Secular Student Alliance of San Jose State University. They could provide us with some assistance. I will definitely be there.

A bullhorn would not be a good idea. We don't want to disrupt classes. Not to mention its a violation of San Jose muni code to use one without a permit.

I asked about the bull-horn. That's too bad. There are a few things that I think I'd like to yell. I can still make signs I suppose. I just sent you his email.

We had a lovely get together last night at Farah's and we thoroughly mocked all the appropriate young earth creationists while eating and drinking sinfully good food and spirits.

Ken Ham has also posted about this event.

If the rhetoric from Ken Ham was any indication, we should be prepared to see the same intolerance from the Comfort camp. Keep taking the high road, especially in your comments.

I will do my best to be there at noon tomorrow, however I have two essays to finish for class first. Does anyone know where on campus this is taking place?

    September 17, 2013

    • Karly L.

Oops. Just saw the comment that this is taking place on the 16th. In which case I look forward to more information. I like the banana idea, but wish we could get some ancestral bananas!

We should grab up the free DVDs. This will cause Mr. Comfort expense with no benefit.

Then how do we dispose of the DVDs? Too bad they cannot be reused.

If you had an atheist information table and were handing out something -- perhaps a DVD of video clips -- and a Christian group repeatedly took several copies in order to throw them away and not allow you to distribute them to the general public, would you have no objection to that? .... .... .... .... .... .... .... .... ..... ..... ..... ..... ..... .... ..... .... Sauce for the goose is sauce for the gander. "The solution to bad speech is more speech."

Note that the DVDs probably cost them a nickel each, so swiping them doesn't cause them much expense. And they probably have enough boxes of DVDs that they probably get just as much profit as ever. I say, go to hand out our stuff, not to take theirs.

      1 · September 17, 2013

  • Natalie J. E. L.

Can't get there right at 12, but probably a little after 1. Do we know where on campus? I second the idea of taking all the DVDs. Perhaps on the preventative side, we can email someone at SJSU and express our objection.

    September 16, 2013

    • Louise

What you suggest is called censorship. (And, I agree with Jim, theft.) .... .... .... .... .... .... .... .... ..... ..... ..... ..... ..... .... ..... .... "The solution to bad speech is more speech." It is our right to be there and to protest. It is not our right to take away his group's right to distribute their 'literature'. .... .... .... .... .... .... .... .... ..... ..... ..... ..... ..... .... ..... .... If you wouldn't want his group to steal all our flyers or such at an event in order to keep our message from being distributed, then we shouldn't do it to him.

I just can't believe any SJSU administrator would have okayed creationists soliciting students with this garbage. As a student there, I'm not okay with being harassed and bombarded with propaganda on my way to class. It's one thing for school-based Christian or atheist organizations to be present on campus, but they can't be allowing Ray Comfort's garbage. Next it'll be the WBC or some fundie pro-life group. I'll happily contact an administrator.

Just noticed the time of this and I can't make it. In fact I have to work till 7pm tomorrow as we have an open-house for customers.

Hope you folks who can make it give em hell on my behalf.

Tim, it's OCTOBER 16 - a month from now. Also, does anyone know where at SJSU? It's a big place....

UC Berkeley has a really nice dino fossil display. If you go there, be sure to check it out.

    September 17, 2013

  • Dana N.

Since this is happening at Universities, I don't expect Comfort's BS to be very popular. This IS where many of the students are learning evolution and biology. I suspect many will toss them in the first nearby trash. Comfort and his minions will not be as welcome as he may hope.

    September 17, 2013

  • Dana N.

I can't stand to listen to him, but look forward to what others have to say who do attend.

I started the group because there wasn't any other type of group like this. I've met some great folks in the group who have become close friends and have also met some amazing business owners.
