Sapelo Island is a state-protected island (barrier island) located in McIntosh County, GA. The island is reachable only by airplane or boat, with the primary ferry coming from the Sapelo Island Visitors Center in McIntosh County, a seven-mile, twenty-minute trip.

Visitors to the island must be a part of an organized tour or guests of residents on the island.

The Sapelo Island, community of Hogg Hummock includes several small businesses and two active churches, including First African Baptist Church at Raccoon Bluff (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/First_African_Baptist_Church_at_Raccoon_Bluff). Most inhabitants of the town are African Americans (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/African_American), part of the Gullah-Geechee (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gullah-Geechee) community, and have been living on the island for generations. The current population in the community is estimated to be 42.
