Mobile Developer Meetup!

Lets start the next part of our educational series by starting to dive into the world of Android! We will start with the basics of Android and then work toward putting those lessons to practice by creating our Pivotal Tracker app for Android! Pizza is served at 6:30pm.

It could be user error. I learn more about how it all works every time I reinstall.

I did have ia32-libs installed on the 64-bit OS. I was even able to install one of the example apps on a couple of devices. So Android development is possible on a 64-bit Ubuntu, but it was unstable. Sometimes lsusb and adb would see a device and sometimes it wouldn't. Then one day, Eclipse quit working. I reinstalled it and the JDK several times, but it just wouldn't run. There was a conflict with some Gmome library. So I decided to try the 32-bit OS instead and so far it seems more stable. I

That is interesting, Ed. I am wondering if you stuck with the 64-bit version of Ubuntu and added ia32-libs (doing apt-get install ia32-libs), everything might have worked? Seems likely, but it is good to know about the Android development environment, so thanks! Was it the Android SDK that was having issues or eclipse/ADT plugin?

I have the Android development environment setup on Ubuntu 11.10. I had to do it a few times before I got it to work right. The key seems to be to use the 32-bit OS, even though I have an AMD64 CPU.

Are the android meetups going to be posted here, or are they all at the same time and in the same location?

@James: Do you know when the next session re Android is scheduled for? Are they every Monday or just random dates?

Really enthusiastic speakers gave a great short intro to Android for programmers (ended up buying the recommended book). Can't wait for the next session. PS: There were lots of people, so get there early if you want a good seat and don't sit near the door else you'll be surrounded by latecomers :)

Content was good. Too much time waiting for trainer to code the app. Should have been more explanation and less watching him code. Also, some hard copy handouts or a DropBox with documents for all the referenced items including links to websites and sample code. I'd be happy to help with some of this stuff on-going.

Thanks for the book recommendation, Forgot about Deitel books, they were a lifesaver for me in college.

Thanks Mike, this is not something we'd have time (or access/bandwidth) to set up at the meetup, would it?

    February 28, 2012

Concerning setup: Allan recommended "Android for Programmers: An App-Driven Approach" book at a previous meeting. The "before you begin" section of that book has setup instructions consistent with book exercises and is available at http://www.deitel.com/bookresources/androidfp/Androidfp_BYB.pdf

Basically you need updated JDK, ADT (for Eclipse), & SDK for development environment.

Is there anything we should download / install prior to the meeting tonight? i.e. I have Eclipse but is there anything else I need ? A plugin ? :)

Would be interested if anyone's done Android development under Ubuntu Linux (using the SDK & emulator, does it have too many limitations?) & whether the recently announced "Ubuntu for Android" is of any use -

I will be talking about the agenda tonight. But tonight we have an introduction to Android session. We will be discussing topics like getting your environment up and running. I will also be having a discussion around Android in general and its future.

I decided to start Reno Motorcycle Riders Group because I wanted to be part of a group of people who enjoyed my passion... I was excited and nervous. Our group has grown by leaps and bounds. I never thought it would be this big.
