The Ig Nobel Prizes honor achievements that first make people laugh, and then makes them think. The Prizes are intended to celebrate the unusual, honor the imaginative — and spur people's interest in science, medicine, and technology. They are awarded every September in a gala ceremony at Harvard attended by 1100 splendidly eccentric spectators who watch the winners step forward to accept their Prizes, handed out by genuinely bemused genuine Nobel Laureates.

The theme for this year's ceremony, although not necessarily of this year's prizes, will be FOOD. It will be featured in the world premier of the mini-opera What's Eating You, about a couple who stop eating food, and nourish themselves exclusively with pills — and about what happens after that.
