Any visible advance that affects their lives in material ways. Advances in medicine, fuel efficiency, and practical energy alternatives get a very positive reaction across a wide spectrum of personal interests. Space and high-end physics are glamorous, but most people want their lives improved on a day-to-day basis and don't appreciate/understand how the 'fuzzy' sciences contribute to that. It is short-sighted to-be-sure, but that is how most people live their lives unfortunately.
