Data for Good

Details

I am very excited that Jonathon Morgan has agreed (after some begging) to speak to us about his mission to use data for good. This lecture will be the second in our 2015 series and I am excited that Jonathon, who co-authored "The ISIS Twitter census: Defining and describing the population of ISIS supporters on Twitter" (http://www.brookings.edu/research/papers/2015/03/isis-twitter-census-berger-morgan) (Brookings Institution) and the host of the popular "Partially Derivative" podcast will give us his perspective on using data to make the world a better place.

Description:

Every aspect of business is being overhauled by data and data science, but that's only part of the story. We're using the same techniques to improve our cities, governments and schools, and tackle important global issues like poverty and human rights. Just like in the enterprise, there is so much data and so few data scientists to investigate it, that we're barely scratching the surface of what's possible.
Fortunately, you don't need a PhD to use data for social good -- in fact, it's a great way to learn while solving real world problems. We'll talk about a few ways you can plug in with non-profits and organizations like the United Nations, find meaningful projects, and use your data powers for good.

More about the speaker:

Jonathon is the CEO of Popily, a startup for data exploration, sharing and storytelling. He’s also a co-author of the ISIS Twitter Census for the Brookings Institution and a frequent speaker about data science and technology for social good. In his spare time Jonathon co-hosts Partially Derivative, a surprisingly popular podcast about data science and craft beer.
