Jules Buck Jones: Current Time
University Galleries, 233 West Sessom Drive, San Marcos, TX, USAugust 19, 2026 - September 05, 2026
From TXST Galleries:
"In Current Time, Jules Buck Jones presents a new body of paintings that traverses deep geological time through dense, immersive landscapes populated by hybridized flora, fauna, and imagined ecologies. Large-scale panels, diptychs, and gridded compositions layer saturated color, rhythmic mark-making, and fragmented animal anatomy to evoke worlds that feel simultaneously prehistoric, cosmic, and speculative. Rather than depicting a specific place or moment, the paintings collapse distinctions between past, present, and future, inviting viewers to consider humanity’s fleeting place within Earth’s vast temporal scale.
Commissioned by the Texas State University System Public Art Committee, the works in Current Time will ultimately become part of Esperanza Hall. This exhibition offers a rare opportunity to experience the paintings together before their permanent installation.
Jules Buck Jones is an artist living and working in Wimberley, TX. Jones creates large scale paintings and drawings of abstracted flora and fauna. The work showcases a range of interests in the natural sciences, local ecologies, and deep time. Jones is currently working on a suite of paintings for Esperanza Hall at the Texas State University, Round Rock Campus. He teaches painting and drawing at Texas State University in San Marcos, with a focus on wet media and Risograph printing."Reception August 21, 2026 | 6:00 - 8:00 pm

The Collaborative Screendance of Ana Baer Carrillo
Texas State University Galleries, Joann Cole Mitte (JCM) Building / 233 Sessom Dr @ N Comanche St, San Marcos, TX, USAugust 21, 2026 - November 07, 2026
From TXST Galleries:
"Video-choreographer Ana Baer Carrillo creates site-responsive screendance that explores relationships among body, landscape, memory, and place. Working through her collaborative practices Alebrije Collective and WECreate Productions, Baer brings together choreography, moving image, and sound to create immersive installations that transform the gallery into an environment for embodied viewing.
Latent Spaces: Embodied Geographies is a site-specific, multi-channel digital video installation presenting screendance works by Baer Carrillo created in collaboration with Alebrije Collective (Gallery 1) and WECreate Productions (Gallery 2). The installation’s immersive soundscapes were developed in collaboration with composer and sound designer Richard D. Hall, who combines ambient location recordings captured by Baer Carrillo with original musical compositions to create synchronized audiovisual environments that extend the choreographic experience across multiple large-scale projections.
Throughout these bodies of work, Baer Carrillo approaches landscapes—whether ecological or urban—as choreographic partners."Reception August 21, 2026 | 6:00 - 8:00 pm

Cristina Velásquez: Somos Animales Poéticos
Dougherty Arts Center, Dougherty arts center 1110 Barton Springs Road,, Austin, TX, USAugust 22, 2026 - October 03, 2026
From the Dougherty Arts Center:
"Somos Animales Poéticos is a solo exhibition and book presentation by Cristina Velásquez, celebrating the Austin launch of her monograph published by Dust Collective in May 2026.
Built from the margins of dominant photographic traditions, the work integrates photographs and literary fragments into a visual language that becomes a personal mythology. Moving across documentary, archival collage, and staged reenactment, her compositions function simultaneously as subjects and backgrounds, following the structure of a weaving where every element is part of a larger body.
Drawing from literature and feminisms from the Global South, the exhibition rethinks photographic discourse from Latin American perspectives. From her position as a Colombian woman, artist, and mother in Austin, Velásquez’s work reclaims subjectivity against erasure—affirming photography as a medium of connection, critical thought, and poetic expression."Reception August 26, 2026 | 7:00 - 9:00 pm
