What Chinese languages/dialects do you speak? How proficient are you at those langages? If you are Chinese, what level of English do you speak?

Know pinyin, some grammar and idiom, a few hundred characters. Not a lot of experience speaking. This last bit is what I think the meet-up group is best for: there's no substitute for actually talking! Can't read a text or web-page yet, just pick out occasional fragments when reading. Can laboriously construct simple sentences, but often completely blank out on listening and trying to parse the answers. Lately been using Anki to cycle through decks of chars and phrases. Note: Not a native speaker of English, but close to that level.

Where did you learn Chinese? If in China, what city?

Did course in LA, plus some self-study. Not been to China yet.

What aspects of Chinese culture interest you most?

Tell us a little something about yourself. Perhaps your professional field or if a student, your major or other interest and hobbies you may have. Members may find they have more in common than Chinese culture!

Software engineer. Like languages, SF, music.

Dutch guy, recently moved to Austin from Los Angeles. Know just a bit of Mandarin, would like to learn more.

What Michael L. is saying about this Meetup Group

An excellent opportunity to get some speaking practice, meet others with the same interest in Mandarin, and exchange study tips.
