Meet Stu Halloway

I apologize for the last minute change here, but the chance to sit down with one a member of Clojure core team is hard to pass up.  We're still working on the location, but it will be somewhere in the I-35 S / 360 area.  We'll hang out as long as Stu has time, and if there's interest we can camp a bit after and do some coding.

We'll post the location some time tonight and send out an email.  Hope to see you there!

    Had a blast.

My poor notes from the meetup:

Why creating static methods in classes with :gen-class awkward. Stu replies: not a priority for the team to make doing that easy. Consider interop the other way.

    Stu mentioned O'Riley Clojure Cookbook

Stu asks: What things out there strike you as painful or weird?
    * name spaces are not packages and are not classes
    * lazy sequences and remembering to use apply

Stu dreams of a curated Repl and gotcha cookbook. Repl with custom reader and eval step. Racket community has done this. There is so much more intelligence that could easily be added to the repl.
Steve wishes Sam was here, to talk about repeating the past and dreams of a better future.

Should I use datomic or am I learning too much? Stu: try it in anger for a half-day, using the query laguage; see if you like it.

I don't have a smart phone, and I will probably leave around 11. So if there could be a final decision before hen, that would be great.

Meeting location has been updated, so it shows right place now.

I have a location suggestion. So fifteen minutes away from cafe express both Stu Halloway and Neal Ford will be speaking at the NFJS conference. The time of this meetup is during the lunch break of the conference. If it was closer to the Marriott hotel and at a place that served food we could have two awesome guests at the meetup.

I don't know anyone at the school in the old Sam's complex.

hopefully one of the restaurants will work out. If not, maybe Pleasant Hill library has a meeting room?

Just talked to Stu Halloway and he is excited to meet a group of clojurians.

Do we have a specific plan? I see the conference day ends around 5pm tomorrow. Perhaps an evening get together? Cabo Bob's is right near the conference hotel, and that might work out well.

Well the lunch break for us is from 1230 to 130 so that seems like plenty of time for a lambda lunch. Otherwise we could do an evening thing where we hack at the repl over beers. He brought a drone that you can fly around with a repl so I think he might have wanted to show that off at the meetup.

I'm going to be attending the no fluff just stuff conference in Austin so I'll be in the area for this. I wonder if I could get Stu Halloway to stop by for a little bit since he is the keynote speaker at the conference.

Ok - I set the location to Cafe Express again. It's worked well in the past, but I wanted to see if anyone else had a better idea.

If anyone is interested, there's an interesting coursera class on discrete optimization that just started this week [https://class.coursera.org/optimization-001] The name sounds boring, but it's basically about techniques to solve computationally hard problems. I'm working through it in Clojure, and I'd love to compare implementation techniques if anyone else is interested in giving this a go.

I may be able to reserve a room at the new computer science building at UT. I need to check on internet connectivity options. Anyone else interested?

This is an interesting option. I think I'm with James in wanting to be somewhere with food/drink options, but maybe we can schedule one of this at UT some time and see if we can get some UT students involved.

I vote for Cafe Express. But I'd totally be in favor of anywhere that serves beer, as long as it's a weekend.
