LispCast Introduction to Clojure

NOTE:  This is a two day event.  We will meet at Tech Shop on both Saturday 8/23 and Sunday  8/24, from noon to 4pm.  You are welcome to just come Saturday, but please let us know so we can plan accordingly.

Given the number of new Clojurists in the group, now would be a great time to break out our group license for the LispCast Introduction to Clojure videos. There are three videos, each one with exercises.  The plan is to cover them in two 4-hour sessions, leaving lots of time for to work on the projects and get help.  (the video content will be about 20% of the class, the rest will be code/learn time)

FAQs

• Everyone is welcome - no Clojure experience is necessary. This first class is for absolute beginners.  We'll have more advanced classes later.

• You should bring your own laptop. You'll need to install Java and leiningen before the class.  Setup instructions are at our github.

• We'll have food and drink available on both days.  (probably pizza, feedback is welcome)

• If you already know Clojure and would like to help, you are encouraged to come help.  (Or, you can work on your own Clojure projects on the side)

• If you'd like your own copy of the videos for future reference, use coupon code AUSTIN at PurelyFunctional.tv.

It was a great meetup - I had to punt on Sunday because I got sick :( But I'll keep an interest in Clojure and can't wait for future opportunities.

Thanks everyone! Thanks for coming out! Tomorrow we'll do a real project, learn some more basic Clojure data structures and even do map/reduce. Should be fun! I think tomorrow maybe we'll just bring some snacks instead of trying to orchestrate lunch? There are several placed to grab something right before the meeting.

We are in meeting room 2/3. When you get here, we should have someone up front. If you don't see one of us, just tell the Tech Shop front desk person you are here for the the class.

The company I work for is finishing up its new training facility. We're at 2222 and 620, and I can arrange for a meeting like this there.

This would be a great option in the future. I'm hoping this will be the first of many classes we do.

We've put together some basic setup information: https://github.com/AustinClojure/LispCastClass. If you have any problems at all, send us a note and one of us will jump on a hangout with you and help you get ready.

Sound great. I studied lisp in college in 1981. Time to see why functional? is getting so popular now.

I'm interested but *probably* couldn't do a weekend time (kids).

And, I should add, Sam has donated TechShop classroom time for us to run this.

I'm in if it's a normal clojure meetup schedule, out if it's a weekend time. Also, I may be unique in this group in that I am pretty clueless about clojure basics.

I started the group because there wasn't any other type of group like this. I've met some great folks in the group who have become close friends and have also met some amazing business owners.
