Please note: These workshops are shown as "no charge" here on Meetup.com, however, there is an admission charge at the event.

On Tuesday, May 26th, we will have access to the Umlauf Sculpture Garden for two daytime workshops. Umlauf Sculpture Garden is one of Austin's hidden gems featuring the sculpture work of late Charles Umlauf set in a tranquil, outdoor garden setting. It's a beautiful sanctuary of art in a lush environment.

The morning workshop will be from 10 am to noon. We'll cover understanding your camera and how it responds to light including metering and lens selection. After we've covered this material, we will explore the garden applying what we learned to tell the stories and reveal the emotions behind each piece of art. It's a great way to expand your photographic skills because the sculptures are very patient (just kidding!) and using photography and light to tell the story of each sculpture is a great exercise. There's no single way to photograph these sculptures and each day's variation in time of year and atmospheric conditions provides new aspects for exploration. There can also be some beautiful flora at the garden so there is also the opportunity to apply the lessons to macro/floral studies. (Feel free to bring your macro lens or extension tubes if you have them).

The afternoon workshop will be from 1 pm to 3:30 pm. For this session, we will welcome local Colombian model Ana Maria. Ana Maria will be our subject as we explore outdoor portraiture. We'll start by understanding our ambient light conditions and scout locations the provide the best light. Then, we'll modify the available light and introduce artificial light in the form of flash. After we've garnered a fundamental understanding of these principles, we will work on creating environmental portraits that show relationship between our subject and the statues in a compelling manner.

Given that these are weekday workshops, the groups tend to be smaller so I can spend more time with each participant.

Attendees will pay at the front desk upon arrival. The morning session is $39 / $49 for non-members of the garden. The afternoon session is $69 / $79 for non-members of the garden.

Enrollment in the afternoon workshop includes photo release for promotional/portfolio use so you'll not only learn about artistic photography but you'll also have the opportunity to add to your portfolio.
