Here is the message I sent out to our neighborhood listserv.:
I joined a chess group last February. Last week I had the most amazing experience when I went to the Austin chess tournament at the Salvation Army Post on Cumberland St. A huge amount of children showed up! Their parents were hustled into a room far from where the children were. Kids ran to get a seat where the chess sets were and silence descended for the next few hours. Adults were playing also but the kids were incredible. There were four year olds playing their equals - adult or child (one of them me) and they were totally engrossed! Most of these children were Asian. These children were serious. If I forgot to hit the clock after a move, I was glared at by my infant opponent who did it for me! If you have a kid interested in Chess, please contact Adrian at the address above. It's all free. Every Sunday evening at 6:00 pm. You could check it out this evening. Guests are welcome and can even play. There is another group on Monday evenings at a further away site. The regular chess classes are not crowded. Everyone gets to play, and it is so much fun. Bobby
