Austin, TX 73301Prepare to P - A - R - T - A - Y - !
Hoping for a clear Fall day (and evening for those brave enough to stay out - last month we had 9 boats - most stayed 'til midnight - 3 stayed overnight). The moon will be in its' last quarter tonight so it will not be as bright as the raft-up hosted on 09-25. Trick or Tweet is an Austin Weird Expression for Halloween.
Raft-up will begin around 3pm - feel free to sail around AYC (Austin Yacht Club) until then - for those that want to return to port by sunset you should plan on leaving by 5pm - those who stay out should check their lights functionality (especially their anchor lights - got battery back-up? - got blankets and sweatshirts?). This may be your last warm swim (and chance to scrub your bottom - or to get crew to do it for you). LOOK for the pirate flag on Chocolate Pearl (picture below).
As always everyone should be prepared to share 'tricks', 'tweets' / 'treats' (grog, hard tack, salt pork, gun powder, cannon balls, anchors, 'other drinks and munchies', Hot Buttered Rum, Home Brew, Hard Cider, Fajitas, etc.). Grills will be grilling (someone remember to bring the first aid kit and the fire extinguisher(s)).Feel free to come dressed as your favorite historical charactor (fictional or not). I would expect to see a number of 'Captains of the Coast' and 'Pirate Wenches'.
Some weird thoughts for this raft-up . . .
1) Will Ruthmary T (Greg W) rise out of the pumpkin patch and give out treats to all the bad-A.S.S. sailors?
2) What will the DreamCatcher (Greg H) catch?
3) Will Father Darrin get Blownaway?
4) Will the Choclatier Captain (Better Than Chocolate) be giving away He-She milk chocolate kisses?
5) Will Dale Hobie or not Hobie (and with 7 crew this time?)?
6) Will Brad and Jen get DoubleVision?
7) How many will be Living Lavish?
8) Will Lane, FINALLY, Escape the Haitians?
9) Will Chocolate Pearl have margaritas (Do bares crap in the woods)?
Attention Captains: When signing up, be sure to note your estimated time of departure (weighing anchor), the name of the port you will be departing from, boat name / description, how many crew you can accommodate, method of contact, and how late you might stay out on the lake. Don't forget to have a 360 degree white anchor light available (authorities check for this often) to drop your own hook and have current reg. on board.
Attention Crew: Those looking for crew slots should contact the individual captains who have space available. Plan on showing up to the appropriate port 15 minutes prior to weighing anchor. See top line of page for members listing (you must be logged in to use it). SEARCH FOR A SKIPPER - Members most recently on site will be listed first (leaders are USUALLY Captains). Not all Captains are leaders but all are members. Look to the right of member listing and see the envelope to email the individual. You may click on their picture to look at profile to see if they are a Captain - LOOK especially at page 4 and beyond since they have not visited the site recently (inactive?). Don't forget to assist your skipper with clean-up at the end of the event and to be honest with him / her about your sailing experience (or lack thereof). Those that have appropriate music (Ahoy Parrotheads) are encouraged to bring their CD's and / or musical instruments / voices.
WEATHER ISSUES: If the wind is blowing over 25 knots or it is raining please contact your Captain as to his or her plans (Captains may touch base with me via email or phone[masked]-SAIL (VoIP); I will not be able to check these after 11:00am on the day of the event).
SUGGESTION - ON CARPOOLING / BOAT POOLING: A number of captains are apparently reluctant to commit their boats concerned about having to return to their port before they wish to (to accommodate a crew member's desire to leave early). If crew RSVP in groups of 2 or more, perhaps one person of that group would consider leaving their car at Anderson Mill Marina (balance at departing marina) then captains would only have to take someone as far as Anderson Mill (very short trip on the water from the raft-up area) to get them ashore. This way everyone's timeline could be accommodated. Keep in mind (under this possible change) those that leave early might depart the raft-up area with a different skipper.
CONTACTING another boat while underway - tune into channel 69 on your VHF - Austin Sailing Society tradition.
