Most of my work has been literary fiction, but in early 2013 I finished my first narrative non-fiction ms. Now working on my second. Although there are many writers' groups in the DFW area, I didn't join any - I am joining this group because the writers seem to be serious about this art that we love and toil over year after year with often little acknowledgment. I simply cannot NOT write, and I'm excited about sharing time with like-minded writers.
Workshops geared toward writing skills interest me the most. After working diligently to establish a consistent writing schedule and begin with an outline, I've learned that those activities are detrimental to my creativity and writing flow. But I believe improving my writing means that I have to try things others find helpful. Like many writers, "marketing" is an unpalatable four-letter word akin to Brussels sprouts at the age of three - we don't often learn to love it, but we know it's good for us.
First goal: continually improve in order to reach second goal: representation, in order to achieve third: publishing.
After twenty years in Dallas, I moved back to Baton Rouge four years ago. Happy to be home and thrilled to be able to watch the Tigers again!
