Wire Pass - Buckskin Gulch - White House

Hike through what is billed as the “world’s longest slot canyon,” and what is undoubtedly one of the most spectacular backcountry destinations in the Southwest. This is a long, tough hike, but the reward is towering sandstone walls, spectacular light and shadows, and an experience you’ll never forget!

Difficulty Rating: Moderate, it’s a long first day.
Type of Hike: Backpack- Two nights
Total Hike Distance: 20 miles backpacking – 13 on Friday and 7 on Sunday plus a 10 + mile day hike on Saturday.

Hike Description:

We will drive up Thursday after work and crash at the White House campground.

On Friday, we will enter at the Wire Pass trailhead early in the morning.

The hike through Buckskin is an amazingly tight run through a small, intimate canyon – in some spots you’ve can touch both canyon walls at the same time even though they tower hundreds of feet above you! Once we get into the narrow stuff, it’s 13 miles of hiking on rough rocky tread through possible muck, waist-deep pools, and loose sand to get to high ground where we camp – at the confluence of Buckskin Gulch and the Paria River. Expect a small patch of bouldering and a rock jam where you need to lower yourself down (8 feet) with a rope or crawl through the "rabbit hole."

On Saturday, we'll leave our base camp and day hike down the Paria River through some absolutely spectacular scenery. The sandstone canyon walls will be colorful and awe-inspiring. We'll return to our base camp at the confluence for dinner and cocktails.

Sunday is more leisurely, exiting out the White House trailhead on the Paria river – about 7 miles from camp. We’ll return to our shuttle cars, then home.

Don’t miss this spectacular hike!

Please don't sign-up for this trip if you haven't yet hiked with the Club or haven't yet paid your annual dues. Carpools will be set-up as needed. No refunds or transfers if you cancel for any reason. The permit fee is $15/person so $40 will be refunded at the trailhead. If you sign up and cancel, you lose your $55.00.
