Why: membership helps covers the MeetUp $19 MONTHLY HOSTING FEE!!
Meet other dog owners for quality playtime & socializing. No matter what kind of dogs you have, if they have lots of energy & love to run and pull, they will enjoy urban dog mushing. People associate urban dog mushing as a snowless activity so it can be done all year round & YES we do have sleds for the snow in winter to run the dogs as a team.
All activities are at you & your dog's own risk. You are responsible for your dog's actions & their well being so make it a priority to know if you and your dog's psychological & physical fitness levels are compatible with the chosen activity.
You want a HEALTHY, ACTIVE DOG who loves to run and be with you. This is the most incredible way to bond with your pet. Only do this activity if your dog enjoys it. Young dogs with lots of energy are great for this sport. Make sure your dog is physically able to do dog sledding, mushing or scootering.
This is a very informal meetup, so whomever can come, whichever day gets quality playtime with fellow dogs. We have been keeping it consistent for more than 4yrs & so far there's a regular crew that is there on either day depending on a few variables. Always fun play, no aggression & the pack bonds!!
This group is open to all dog enthusiasts who want to share their ideas, questions, experiences and participate in dog-powered sports for their working dog. We organize informal fun events such as dogsledding, scootering, bikejoring, hiking, etc. Although these activities are geared more towards the northern breeds YET all breeds are welcome to join in as long as the dogs (and owners) are properly socialized. Working dogs are happiest when they have a purpose and enjoy doing what they were bred to do. Please join us and help promote a healthier, happier & more meaningful lifestyle for your beloved canine companion. Preserve the pack, protect the bond and get into the outdoors for a healthy relationship between yourself and your best friend…Mushing is fun, both to take part in and to watch. Your dog will love it, you’ll become a team and you’ll get fit too!
We are an amateur running team ALL YEAR ROUND 4 SEASONS - PLEASE SHARE LOCATIONS SO WE CAN ALTERNATE RIDING PLACES & IF POSSIBLE INVEST IN A FULL BODY HARNESS & ANY RUNNING GEAR. WE HAVE TUG LINES FOR SEVERAL DOGS TO RUN TOGETHER. Come learn more about the sports of dog sledding, mushing, dog pulling, bikejoring & scootering.
These simple Basics: a dog’s basic needs is EXERCISE, dogs need on average 30 minutes of exercise a day, dogs love to run, any type of dog can learn a pulling sport such as Dog scootering where 1 or more dogs pull as you ride a non-motorized kick scooter. It's mushing, but not just in the winter, generally with fewer dogs & with a scooter instead of a dogsled. The scooter is generally non-motorized & has mountain-bike-style tires ranging from 16" to 26" The scooter has mountain-bike-style brakes & a large footboard to stand on and kick off from. Scooters are occasionally called kick bikes because they are not yet largely marketed for the sport of dog scootering. An alternative is to use a bicycle instead of a scooter, keep in mind that its more difficult to dismount a bicycle in case of an emergency. This alternative sport of harnessing dogs to a bicycle is known as bikejoring.
What equipment is needed?
To enjoy this sport, you will need a scooter, heavyweight bungee with lead line that connects the scooter to your dog(s), a harness for each dog(s), a helmet for your head (other protective gear optional) & plenty of WATER for your dog(s)
There are no reins or other signaling devices to control the dog, it must be motivated by its own desire to run & respond to the owner's voice for direction.
Be sure to get your dog used to the equipment, most dogs take to this like fish to water. Getting used to having a scooter behind them is pretty easy. Be sure you know the verbal commands associated with mushing. But more importantly, be sure your dog is trained and has learned them before you take a steep hill.
GEE = RIGHT / HAW = LEFT / WHOA = SLOW DOWN TO STOP - SO COME HAVE FUN MUSHING!!
