Ostrea Detroit - Happy Hour
Ostrea Detroit , 536 Shelby,, Detroit, MI, USDowntown Detroit’s dining scene has a shiny new pearl, literally. Ostrea Detroit, an upscale seafood restaurant, has quietly been taking shape for years inside the historic Murphy-Telegraph Building, waiting to dazzle locals with caviar, oysters, and champagne. With its blend of old-school elegance and warm Midwestern hospitality, Ostrea is positioning itself as a must-visit destination for seafood lovers, celebratory dinners, and anyone curious to experience a bit of classic glamour in the heart of the city.
In true Detroit fashion, Ostrea comes with credentials. It’s the brainchild of the team behind the venerable London Chop House, a legendary steakhouse just downstairs – and the Gatzaros family (local restaurateurs known for Fishbone’s and other Detroit institutions). That pedigree had locals excited from the start, and Ostrea lives up to the hype. The restaurant’s very name, Ostrea, is Latin for oyster, signaling its focus on the fruits of the sea. From the moment you spot the nine-foot mermaid statue perched above its door, complete with a sign proclaiming “The World is Your Oyster,” you know you’re in for something special.
Ostrea is nestled on the ground floor of the six-story Murphy-Telegraph Building at West Congress and Shelby, a stone’s throw from Detroit’s Guardian Building and financial district. For nearly a decade, the corner space sat dark and overlooked, but no longer.
It’s the kind of place where the bartender might introduce himself (that would be Thomas Phillips, the hands-on beverage manager) and remember your favorite drink by your second visit. Ostrea emphasizes hospitality and a “comfortable yet polished” experience that accommodates all occasions.
Take advantage of the early evening deals to sample a few dishes during happy hour.
Location: 536 Shelby St., Detroit, MI 48226. (Ground floor of the Murphy-Telegraph Building, at W. Congress & Shelby in downtown’s Financial District. Look for the mermaid statue!)
Parking: Metered street parking and paid lots are available nearby on Shelby and Congress. Valet parking is offered at the London Chop House entrance (155 W. Congress St.) for around $17, which covers both restaurants.
I can’t make a reservation for this place for happy hour so seating will be first come first serve. The bar has approximately 10 seats in total.
