Join us in the Italian Dolomites for a week of hiking and the ultimate in mountain adventure - Via Ferrata!

The hiking in the Dolomites is superb and suitable for all abilities but be warned, the optional Via Ferrata adventure is not for the faint hearted. You will need to be sure-footed and have a head for heights for Via Ferrata but the sheer excitement and exhilaration of negotiating these protected scrambling routes is unbeatable.

Originally built to assist the movements of military units in WW1, Via Ferrata is the key Dolomites attraction. It is a breath taking network of scrambling routes, comprised of skilfully installed fixed cables, ladders and gorge-spanning bridges, which aid ascents to dramatic summits.

Backabush Xplorers and Collett's Mountain Holidays are teaming up to offer you this great trip.

Cost: £665 if we are a full group of 30 people. If we have less than 30 people the trip will cost £690 or £715 if we are less than 20 people. This is including local transport and airport transfers but NOT the cost of your flight.

Flights: Currently £116 return with British Airways - London Gatwick to Venice Marco Polo airport.

Our airport transfers will be timed to meet the following flights:

OUTBOUND (BA 2582) Wednesday 3 July
Departure - 07:40 Gatwick
Arrives - 10:50 Venice

INBOUND (BA 2585) Wednesday 10 July
Departure - 17:35 Venice
Arrives 18:40 Gatwick

You may want to spend additional days in Venice if you wish but our transfer coach will work to these departures.

Accommodation: We have booked a beautiful, traditional Tyrolean hotel ( Haus Valentin) for our exclusive use. It is run as a hospitable and relaxed hosted chalet complete with charming rooms and absorbing mountain views. All rooms in this quality accommodation are twin share or double (for couples) and are fully en-suite.

Meals: Our hosted accommodation includes warm hospitality and good food on a half board basis. We will be served good semi-continental breakfast daily and each evening (except the Wednesday we arrive) an excellent home cooked three course dinner with wine included. Naturally, they cater for a wide range of dietary requirements and hearty packed lunches can be ordered daily for €5 per day.

Via Ferrata: Collett's will provide us with our own Via Ferrata organiser(s) for the week offering 5 routes during our stay, so we would have one day to entertain ourselves. Possible suggestions are a programme beginning with the Cir Spitz Via Ferrata route (grade 2B), then progressing on to Grade 3 routes, ending with a Grade 4 route. We could also plan a route or another activity for the day when the Collett's organiser is not with us – this could be the Lagazuoi tunnels, which would combine local history with a good day out, or a local walk from Pedraces, or it could be something totally different, for example a day trip to Bolzano to see the Ice Man at the archaeological museum.

Hiking: If the Via Ferrata is really not your kind of thing then there are superb hikes organised by Collett's knowledgeable staff. They will show you the best routes in the mountains and each day they offer a choice of hikes to suit your fitness and experience level.

Local transport: We have negotiated an excellent deal with Collett's to include airport transfers and local coach transport on each day of our trip into the total cost.

Dates: Wednesday 3 - Wednesday 10 July 2013.

Number of Participants: Maximum 30

This is an exceptional trip offering awesome mountain adventure, breath taking scenery, quality en-suite accommodation and delicious meals.

Just a quick reminder that via ferrata is a very HIGH RISK outdoor activity and that insurance is absolutely ESSENTIAL. If you do not yet have insurance which you are 100% certain covers you for via ferrata you should call Viv at Collett's [masked]) now to purchase a policy to cover your holiday. This costs only £30 and could be the best money you ever spend. DO NOT DEPART WITHOUT INSURANCE!

This trip sounds amazing. I am not interested in climbing and so I would like to hike.

    • Geoff

The trip really is amazing and you don't have to do the via ferrata if you don't want to as superb hikes are offered by Collett's each day. You might want to just try one day of via ferrata on an easy, beginners route just to have the experience but that is totally up to you.
