ExpungeMaryland: An App to Help People with Criminal Charges

Details

WHAT'S EXPUNGEMENT?

Expungement provides Marylanders a clean slate. An individual with criminal charges on his or her record can be prevented from finding employment, public housing, and other government services.

While according to Google Trends, Baltimore City and Maryland rank at the top for searching for expungement services, the online resources are poor. They are either legalistic, dense, and long PDFs; short, unhelpful bullets; or simply legally inaccurate.

WHAT'S THE APP?

ExpungeMaryland is an app (currently only web based) http://expunge-md.herokuapp.com/ that will help people understand if they are eligible to expunge their criminal record through a series of binary questions. If an individual finds that they are able to expunge their criminal record, they will be given a short form to fill out which will be sent to the Maryland Volunteer Lawyer's Service (MVLS). MVLS will then provide legal assistance to the individual filing for expungement. ExpungeMaryland was developed by Advocates for Children and Youth with the help of the Office of the Public Defender and University of Maryland School of Law.

HOW YOU CAN HELP?

The creators of ExpungeMaryland are looking for feedback from the tech community. The developers are calling on the knowledge of civic hackers and the legal and direct services community to help improve ExpungeMaryland through their unique insights and experiences.

We look forward to seeing you on July 23rd!
