Nominations now open for Bath's first Tech Award - The SPARKies!

Dear BathSPARK member,

As you hopefully know by now, The SPARKies are Bath’s very first tech awards, aimed at celebrating everything that is great about Bath’s tech sector. Today we are delighted to announce that nominations are now open and we can also confirm sponsors, judges and the details for the awards party.

We would like to take this opportunity to thank the sponsors who have made this celebration of all things tech a reality: thank you to Bath Ventures Innovation Centre (our Lead Sponsor) and also thanks to all of our category sponsors: Eden Ventures, TeachIt, Catalyst Ventures, Handsome IP, Real World, Bowers & Wilkins and BANES Council.

1. Nominations
Nominations for any of 11 categories (including Best Startup, App of the Year, Individual Contribution to Technology, Best Founder, etc) can now be made through the Bath Digital Festival website. Nominations will close on 24th February - so make sure you enter now and/or forward this link to anybody who you think should enter. The full list of categories is at the bottom of this email.

We want to encourage as many nominations as possible, so feel free to nominate your own company/product or someone else's. The only two categories that do not allow self-nominations are Best Mentor and One To Watch in 2012. Also, you can nominate your company/people/product for as many categories as you want (as long as your nomination fits the criteria, obv).

And to make sure we have captured all possible brilliant things tech, there is a 12th category that has yet to be defined. So, it is up to you to suggest a category & nominate an individual/company/product/group for that category.

2. Judging process
The nominations will be judged by a panel of experienced Tech Sector folk including Charles Grimsdale: (Eden Ventures), Simon Bond (Bath Ventures Innovation Centre), Rupert Baines (VP Marketing, Picochip), Mike Large (COO, Real World), Paul Douglas (Editor, Tech Radar), Nick Perrett (Entrepreneur), Garry Pratt (Founder, TeachIT), Richard Turner (Catalyst Ventures Partners), Andrew Carr (Entrepreneur and Organise of Incubate London/Bristol), Greg Ingham (Chairman, Media Clash / Creative Bath), Tom Bradshaw (Business Editor, Bath Chronicle), Tessa Cook (MD eCommerce, Dyson), Ryan Carson (Entrepreneur & CEO Treehouse), Dave Kelly (MD, Storm Consultancy), Sean Atkins (Digital Director Future Plus, Future Publishing) and Danny Haikin (Brand Director, Bowers & Wilkins).

Judges will be asked to cast their votes for the most deserving nominations based on the information provided in the online nomination forms (please note that any judges who have an interest in a company/product will not be allowed to vote in that specific category).

Once we have the scores from the judges, we will announce up to three finalists for each category a week or so before the Awards Party.

3. The Awards Party
The winners of each award will be announced at the Awards Party on 21st March at Komedia. If you want to have a warm fuzzy feeling about working in tech in the Bath area, then do not miss this party. I will tweet the link to online box office later today.

The evening will be presented by award-winning comedian Jarred Christmas, with the essence of the event captured visually through live-drawing by the fantastic Nat Al-Tahhan. Mixing storytelling with gags, Jarred is one of the sharpest improvisers on the comedy circuit. He has featured on prestigious comedy shows as Mock The Week, The World Stands Up, The Comedy Store, Argumental (on Dave), and Edinburgh and Beyond.

Tickets are priced at £15 per person and they include a meal + one drink (Komedia charge a £1 booking fee). Tickets will be available through Komedia box office as of Thursday 2nd February - make sure you book yours now as there is a limited capacity and the event is sure to sell out.

We are aware that BathSPARK events are usually free to enter, therefore it is important to point out that The SPARKies Awards Party is a once-a-year special event that is much more costly to run than our usual networking events - which is why we have to charge. However, this does not mean that BathSPARK networking events will become paid-for in 2012 - they will remain free!

n.b. The SPARKies is a not for profit event and therefore, any proceeds from the event will go back into local educational projects via Bath Digital Festival.
