Logo Contest

Logo Contest

Details

The Bay Area Scala Enthusiasts (BASE) does not yet have a logo. We have been getting by with the Scala logo, shown below.

Ideally, the new logo will be somehow suggestive of the existing Scala logo, yet adds something that also suggests Silicon Valley or the San Francisco Bay Area. We will use the logo in our videos (http://www.youtube.com/user/scalasv), so we would prefer a logo that can be animated. In other words, submissions that show an animation resolving to a still image would work best for us. The logo will be used at various sizes, from 100x100 pixels to 800x800. Contestants must provide each logo submission (and animations, if they wish) at the following sizes as one entry if they wish. The following sizes define the bounding box; logos do not need to be square: 100x100, 250x250, 500x500, 800x800.

The prize will be a Nest Learning Thermostat (http://www.nest.com/). The winner will be announced at a January 2013 meetup (likely Jan 14 or Jan 16) and will be decided by a vote of the membership. Any BASE member can enter the contest. The winner's name, and a URL if the winner desires, will be promoted on our web site for as long as we use their submission.

You can submit as many designs as you wish until 5pm on Jan 11, 2013. Because of limitations imposed by meetup.com's web site, we have set up this event as if it will occur on the contest end date. You do not need to sign up for this event in order to participate; just upload your submissions as if they were photos to this thread (https://groups.google.com/d/topic/scala-base/ObV0TXXB-pU/discussion) on the BASE Google Group. Uploads made after the cutoff time will be ignored.

Be sure to save the original artwork for each submission. The winner will need to be able to provide original artwork in a format that allows us to use the the animation and the static logo at various sizes without pixelization.

Contestants may submit as many entries as they want. All entries will be visible from the moment they are submitted. By making a submission, contestants are assigning worldwide copyright in perpetuity for the submission with respect to all media to Bay Area Scala Enthusiasts.

The full name of the group is "Bay Area Scala Enthusiasts", which is often abbreviated as BASE. There is another local group that also calls itself BASE; they have nothing to do with Scala. That is why members often refer to this group as Scala Base - even though that is not the official name.

Bay Area Scala Enthusiasts is the second largest Scala community in the world, with 900 members. Membership is free and is open to everyone. The group consists of a community of practitioners focused on the Scala language and its application. Meetups feature presentations by members and invited speakers from around the world.

The Nest Learning Thermostat (http://www.nest.com/), billed as the world’s first intelligent thermostat, is an electronic, programmable, and learning thermostat which uses many different ways to optimize the heating and cooling in a home or business to conserve electricity and/or natural resources. Since it is a connected thermostat, the cloud services are written in Scala and are an integral part to the experience. Nest’s thermostat can check the web for local weather conditions and use that data to adjust temperatures accordingly inside the home.

The logo (and video, if submitted), must be a single work of original material created by the Contest entrant, with the exception that the red and black Scala staircase logo may be incorporated. By entering the Contest, entrant warrants that no other party has any right, title, claim, or financial interest in the submission.

Each entrant must be prepared to provide (within seven (7) calendar days of receipt of Sponsor's request) a signed written license from the copyright owner of any sculpture, artwork, or other copyrighted material that appears in the photograph entry, authorizing BASE to reproduce, distribute, display, and create derivative works of the entry in any media now or hereafter known. All releases must be in the form provided by BASE (https://docs.google.com/document/d/1UIKAPBgYJ_kJg_pxUzZXIfN3pLu6WlxWmaFdNUYZ2AA/edit). Failure to provide such releases upon request shall result in disqualification and selection of an alternate winner.
