d3 dat app

iD editor by John '@jfire' Firebaugh

John will be telling us about his experiences building a fully featured application in d3.js
iD is the editor for http://openstreetmap.org and was built and open sourced at http://mapbox.com. You can read the very clean code base yourself, but John will give us some distilled knowledge from his experience!

.append() it to the limit: high performance data visualization with d3 by Victor '@vicapow' Powell

Some critics complain the browser is too slow for "real" data visualization. This talk attempts to prove otherwise by addressing common pitfalls and best practices while presents a few demonstrations of these techniques.

    Hi ,
    I have started D3 Charts. I am really struggling with basic use case. Below is my data from database. I able to create chart but D3 not as expected. D3 is manipulating date ranges and format. Please help.

    var testData = [
    { date: "[masked]",
    line1: 1,
    line2: 3,
    },
    { date: "[masked]",
    line1: 5,
    line2: 2,
    },
    { date: "[masked]",
    line1: 3,
    line2: 7,
    },
    { date: "[masked]",
    line1: 11,
    line2: 7,
    },
    { date: "[masked]",
    line1: 12,
    line2: 8,
    },
    { date: "[masked]",
    line1: 6,
    line2: 13,
    },
    { date: "[masked]",
    line1: 15,
    line2: 3,
    } ];

    Thank you,
    Sai

    Really enjoyed the meetup and the talks - thanks to the organizers and speakers! Here is the sequences sunburst that I showed at the end:
    http://bl.ocks.org/kerryrodden/7090426
    I think that it should generalize to enable analysis of navigation patterns of any web site, or any other type of sequence data.

      Hey Kerry! I tried to contact you via twitter - I really liked the way you're working with this dataset and would like to do something similar with one of our sites. Please let me know if I can ask you a few questions about it ([masked]). Thanks!

    Awesome meetup, thanks github amazing space, I hadn't actually been in yet. If anyone on this list wants to help me square away my pie charts, I would totally dig it. That demo was the first demo i've given of crowdsound, you all were great, thanks !!!!

    Canvas Force Layout http://bl.ocks.org/mbostock/3180395

    Few more Canvas examples:
    Canvas Voronoi http://bl.ocks.org/mbostock/6675193
    Collision Detection http://bl.ocks.org/mbostock/3231307

    Canvas is easy to get started. W3schools has a surprisingly decent guide: http://www.w3schools.com/HTML/html5_canvas.asp

    A quadtree is a data structure and d3 component to quickly search a two-dimensional space. You can use it to find the closest points in Canvas visualizations.
    http://bl.ocks.org/mbostock/4343214

    Here's render queue. It's a simple pattern for rendering lots of data in bite-sized chunks, especially with Canvas. It will spread out the rendering over time so users can continue to interact with your visualization. I use it in parallel coordinates for datasets with 2k-200k rows. Now you can render thousands of things.

    The Quantcast measurement example of d3:
    https://www.quantcast.com/labs/real-time/site/gawker.com
    (again, this is one example, go to other sites or get your own site quantified and click on the "real-time" button on the side)

    Also if we get enough people signing up for our measurement SDK (https://info.quantcast.com/MeasureApps_cs.html) then we will get app data into this system in real-time as well!

    Thanks for listening,
    -Colin

    The lines for the buses going across the bridge are impossible right now, my friend has been waiting for half an hour. Anyone near the 19th and Oakland BART station have room for an extra carpooler?

    October 21, 2013

  • dan

    leaving palo alto around 5:30
    can take 3-4 more people
    just leave message here with where we can find you and we'll pick u

      Whoever is interested, let's meet at 5:30 in front of Macy's men @Stanford mall. I'll be in jeans and black jacket.

      October 21, 2013

    • Stephen

      I'll be there.

    Any chance this will be streamed or recorded? Looks like there are a lot of us on the waiting list who'd watch!

    October 21, 2013

      It will be recorded and put on youtube as usual!

    What is the on-site secure bicycle parking situation?

    October 21, 2013

  • Suzanne K.

    BART strike = carpool || bus. So... I've got a minivan with 6 extra seats. Planning to leave N. Berkeley around 5:30, returning directly after the meetup. Send me an email if you want to join.

      I work in SF but live in Berkeley so if I can hope in after the event that would be great :)

      October 21, 2013

    • Suzanne K.

      The car's all filled. Sorry @david, I can't take any more passengers either way.

    For the 2-minute show and tell: an example of extending a sunburst visualization to analyze sequences of events.
    http://bl.ocks.org/kerryrodden/7090426
    I made this initially to help understand product usage at YouTube, but it generalizes to any web site.

    I have a 2 minute project I'd like to show, the charts and map are all d3: https://www.quantcast.com/labs/real-time/site/gawker.com
    (any other 'quantified' site also works)

    Can we just show up for this or do we really have to be on the meetup list?

    October 21, 2013

    • Ian J.

      a lot of people flake, if you are on the waitlist chances are there will be room for you. its just not guaranteed.

    Really, really wanted to attend this evening's presentation, but I'm not going to be back in SF in time. Hope someone else can enjoy the spot, and that there will be a video available at some point.
