Bay Area Cycling Message Board › New Setting: All members may announce rides

New Setting: All members may announce rides

A former member
Greetings all,

Just a quick note that given our geographical distribution around the bay and in the hope that more members will connect with local riding partners, I've relaxed our meetup settings so that any member may announce a ride at any time. Going for a ride? Don't forget to invite over 2000 of your closest friends!

But please bear in mind that with great power, comes great responsibility. If you host a ride, the people joining you are likely going to look to you as a leader. You assume a responsibility to shepherd everyone through safely unless communicated otherwise. Please choose routes you know or, after solid trip planning, market your ride as an adventure into the unknown if applicable. Give folks a sense for ride difficulty and the availability of fuel and fluid stops along the route. Is it a a no-drop or a drop ride? w/ regroups or no? It's 90 degrees in the valley but should they bring warmers and a jacket in case there's fog on the coast? Remember to make sure everyone's using the buddy-system on your rides!

And if you join a ride, do use common sense. If you might not go off into the back-country alone with a total stranger in your normal life, please don't do it on meetup either. If a group doesn't coalesce around a ride, maybe bow out last minute, no hard feelings. And don't rely totally on the ride leader to get you through. You're riding your own ride. Plan as if you're riding it alone, and then enjoy the company that also happens to be traveling the same route. And pick a buddy!

OK, have fun out there. Remember those two key ingredients to fun: common sense and good planning. Let's ride!

Thank you Josh! I'm going to organize one now. I don't know you but I've been cycling in the Berkeley hills for my whole life. I would like to organize a short (1-2 hours) but steep Berkeley hills ride. Just putting out feelers -- anybody else out there want to do some climbs in the morning or evening, work days or weekend? -Julie
