Sema Gathering

Open to all and no experience needed.

Learn Sema (Sufi whirling) meditation in a few simple steps. This method allows people of all experience levels to turn for a sustained period with ease while listening to sacred and Sufi music. We will also learn music meditation and healing while listening to natural sounds around us such as water, wind, or various live instruments.

In the first part of the gathering we will learn and discuss mystical Persian poetry and teachings of Rumi and Shams. Please wear white or light colored clothing and wear socks or soft soled shoes.  If you wish to turn avoid eating a large meal 1-2hrs before.

A sliding scale donation of $10-25 is greatly appreciated to help cover the cost.

"I attended a Persian Dance Workshop this weekend along with poetry, live music, and some performances. We practiced Sufi whirling. It was truly a magical experience. With the help and guidance of Farima Berenji, I was able to whirl quite comfortably for much longer than I thought I would be able to. And it felt so good."

I don't know Persian. Can I still join? (You don't recite poetry in Persian, do you?)

Thanks Farah, looking forward to seeing you. We read poetry of the mystical poets Rumi or Hafez and listen and turn to beautiful music. It's meditative dance and you don't need to be experienced to enjoy it. Farima is a great facilitator and will help you. Bring a friend if you want.

Here is a link to a Sufi whirling performance that Farima took part in. The turning we participate in class is more simple and there is no fancy dress but the idea is the same:
