The mobile space has developed very differently, however. While the desktop is today an open web-based platform, mobile operating systems are dominated by single-vendor proprietary silos like Android and iOS. Mozilla has set out to create a truly open mobile smartphone OS based on the web: Boot 2 Gecko. In my talk I will explain the origins of the project, give a couple demos and talk about the down and dirty technical details of making a web-based smartphone. Andreas Gal is the Director of Research & Development for Mozilla and manages a team of engineers and researchers working on a broad range of topics with the goal of making the Web more awesome, including a new web-based smartphone OS: Boot2Gecko. Andreas joined Mozilla in 2008 to implement his dissertation research on trace compilation in Mozilla's Firefox browser. After shipping the first just-in-time compiler for JavaScript in Firefox, Andreas went on to co-create Mozilla's research group. Andreas received his Master's degree from the University of Magdeburg in Germany in 2000 and his PhD from the University of California, Irvine in 2006.
