March Bayjax - An evening with Douglas Crockford and Nicholas Zakas

  • March 5, 2012 · 6:00 PM

Hello everyone:

Please join us for our March event. We have two extraordinary speakers for the night, Douglas Crockford and Nicholas Zakas, that will tell us all about Principles of security & Progressive enhancement. This is one of those events you probably don't want to miss.

You can follow @bayjax for announcements.

Details:

  • 5:30pm-6:30pm : Pizza, Networking, recruiting announcements (please come see me if you have any).
  • 6:30pm - 7:30pm : Nicholas Zakas: Progressive Enhancement 2.0: Because the Web isn’t Print

"In the beginning, progressive enhancement was simple: HTML layered with CSS layered with JavaScript. That worked fine when there were two browsers, but in today’s world of multiple devices and multiple browsers, it’s time for a progressive enhancement reboot. At the core is the understanding that the web is not print – the same rules don’t apply. As developers and consumers we’ve been fooled into thinking about print paradigms for too long. In this talk, you’ll learn just how different the web is and how the evolution of progressive enhancement can lead to better user experiences as well as happier developers and users."

  • 7:30pm - 9:00pm : Douglas Crockford - Principles of Security

"The security of distributed applications is critically important. This talk will help you to develop the intuitions needed to think effectively about security. This is not just for people in colored hats. Everyone needs to understand this stuff."

Howdy folks. The video of Doug's talk is hiding here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=... -- we'll announce it officially once we've finished transcribing it and adding captions.

Don't think he's put it up yet. But this is pretty close (though slightly outdated compared to Monday's deck):

Are Crockford's slides up anywhere? He went pretty fast and it would be nice to have a look at some of the stuff he glazed over a bit.

Douglas is an exceptional speaker and this talk on security provided me with a lot of insights. Please post the slides so I may study the Facet and Agency ideas further.

    Always educational @Y!

Overall, I think the talk was pretty good, actually. Not to be overly critical, but Corckford's security talk was totally not what I was expecting. From my perspective only about a third of it was useful and only half of that was actually practical. His digression about that made up language seemed rather pointless to me.

On the other hand Zakas' talk had great content & was highly useful. I plan to discuss some of his points with my coworkers today. I just feel like he was trying to hard to be funny when he really didn't have to.
