Cloud Storage and Security Challenges - BayLISA June 2014

Details
Updated location: Building C, Pioneer Room, 2nd floor. Park on the third floor of the parking garage.
This month we welcome technically-inclined execs from ioSwitch and Evident.io to talk hyperscale cloud and cloud security. There will be no short-but-cool talks this month; we'll return to the Short But Cool format for December's meeting.
Refreshments will be provided by Evident.io.
- Scalability Challenges for Cloud Storage
Dimitar Boyn, founder and CTO of I/O Switch Technologies (http://io-switch.com/)
Topic: The presentation will delve into limitations of current
technologies as hyperscale cloud solution including (1) SAN and NAS, (2)
SSD and (3) software defined storage (SDS). Each technological limitation
shows the need for new thinking and creates new opportunities. What is
needed are fundamentally new approaches for scale-out storage resource
aggregation in the cloud.
Speaker Bio: Dimitar G. Boyn is the Founder and CTO of I/O Switch
Technologies, Inc. Prior to founding I/O Switch, Dimitar was the Chief
Storage Architect for Cisco's cloud platforms, including WebEx. Prior to
WebEx, Dimitar served in various technical roles at software startup
Postpath until it was acquired by Cisco Systems. Dimitar holds a master's
degree in computer science from Sofia University located in his native
country of Bulgaria.
- Cloud computing security risks and opportunities
Tim Prendergast (@auxome), founder and CEO of Evident.io (http://www.evident.io)
Topic: The computing paradigm is rapidly evolving, and the threat landscape has been expanding at a rate far beyond the capabilities of existing security tools. We'll explore how Cloud Computing presents a new set of risks, a new set of security mechanisms, and a whole lot of opportunity for engineers of all disciplines to further develop their security interests.
Speaker Bio: Tim Prendergast is the Founder & CEO of Evident.io, a cloud security company focused on the challenges of continuous risk assessment, compliance management, and threat mitigation. He spent the past three years at Adobe, leading the Cloud Architecture & Security team responsible for the Creative Cloud ecosystem. Prior to that, he facilitated the adoption of cloud and security technologies at various startups and enterprises. He has spent the majority of his career as an information security practitioner, ranging from incident response to research to product development.
Our meetings are scheduled for 7:30pm on the third Thursday of each month, at Yahoo's 700 1st Ave building in Sunnyvale (near Moffett Field, Juniper, Weird Stuff, and the Sunnyvale water plant/landfill).
BayLISA includes system and network administrators across a range of skill levels. BayLISA meets to discuss topics of interest to system administrators and managers. The meetings are free and open to the public.
We always welcome presentation topics and volunteer speakers. Use the "Contact us" link on this page to get in touch with BayLISA's directors.
