August Meetup: Predictably Irrational by Dan Ariely with Dan Ariely!

Behavioral Researchers,

We have a great treat this month.  Dan Ariely is going to join us via video chat to discuss his book Predictably Irrational.  Don't miss out on the chance of chatting with one of the most famous behavioral economists of our time!

Can't wait to see you all then!

Why do our headaches persist after we take a one-cent aspirin but disappear when we take a fifty-cent aspirin? Why do we splurge on a lavish meal but cut coupons to save twenty-five cents on a can of soup?

When it comes to making decisions in our lives, we think we're making smart, rational choices. But are we?

In this newly revised and expanded edition of the groundbreaking New York Times bestseller, Dan Ariely refutes the common assumption that we behave in fundamentally rational ways. From drinking coffee to losing weight, from buying a car to choosing a romantic partner, we consistently overpay, underestimate, and procrastinate. Yet these misguided behaviors are neither random nor senseless. They're systematic and predictable—making us predictably irrational.

I unfortunately did not find the 'discussion' with Dan Ariely that great. I anticipated a good session and did a bit of homework to see if I could get into the subtler critiques of economics, but I was sorely disappointed. I discuss my concerns in an uploaded file here:

The meet up was great. It was nice to have Dan there in-person to discuss everything. Great people with thoughtful and great insights.

It was great to hear Dan speak. He knows so much about the field and has many examples that he can bring into his conversation.

Should be in SF that weekend. Long story short, I'm finishing this summer semester by the 14th. Doubt I will be able to read the book by the 17th. Sounds like the meet-up would be really interesting though! Would I still be able to attend?
