Berkeley Philosophy Reading Group Pages

This is an informal philosophy group that meets in Berkeley, California, approximately once a month. The format for the group is to select readings based on proposals from group members and to focus discussion on the content of those readings.

The group is intended for people who have experience with or a casual interest in philosophy. Though discussion will be oriented primarily around the selected texts rather than general "philosophical discussion", issues important to the philosophical community or society as a whole are open to rigorous, well-reasoned, and respectful debate among group members.

Expectations of members at meetings: Those who come to a meeting are expected to have read the selected texts for that meeting. We all get a lot more out of it that way. Everyone will have an opportunity to speak, but if you prefer just to listen and not say anything, then that is perfectly fine, too.

RSVP policy: If you're sure you'll be going to a meeting, then check "Count me in". If you haven't decided yet, but there is some reasonable chance you'll be going, then also check "Count me in", but in this case, please write a comment (under "Count me in because...") giving some indication of the likelihood you'll be there -- and it's enough to write the word "maybe". There are two considerations here:

  • For you: As long as you're listed on the website as "going", then you'll be notified of any changes and anything else you need to know about the meeting.
  • For the organizer: The organizer of a meeting needs to have a rough estimate of how big the turnout will be. So if you wrote "maybe" and your circumstances change, please update your comment to make it more definite if you're going, or click on "can't go" if you're not going.
As far as this group is concerned, we don't require that members give a definite commitment to attend most of our events, unless we need a real headcount, such as for a restaurant reservation, in which case this will be noted in the announcement.

Making suggestions: If you have an idea for a topic that we could discuss at a future meeting, then go ahead and start a new discussion on the group's message board. Members are also encouraged to comment on ideas posted there, even if it's only to say "I like that."

Costs: As the organizer of this meetup group, I pay $144 a year. So to defray these costs, I accept donations of $2 from each person who shows up at a meeting.
