A few years - although I have always been a writer. I used to be a music journalist.
1) Be believable. 2) Be entertaining. 3) Make the audience care. 4) Write movies I want to see. 5) 2-3 specs per year.
1) An amazing wife whose belief in my abilities and career enables me to write full time. 2) Knowledgeable friends who are readers, lit managers, producers, actors and directors who have always graciously offered to read my stuff. 3) Accepting the truth in John Carpenter's words: "People who are good at other things don't become screenwriters. If you're good at something else, go do that. People become screenwriters because they can't do anything else."
When I was 9, my parents sent me to a summer camp for kids with Diabetes. I didn't have Diabetes. Consider it my inciting incident for becoming a writer. Previously, I was a digital marketing exec in the concert and music industry for 17 years or so.
