Big Data & Cassandra

The focus of the March meetup will be the Apache Cassandra database (cassandra.apache.org)

The agenda is the following:

19:00 Welcome address and community announcements (product releases, job offers, upcoming events - send us yours!)

Speaker: Bence Arató, meetup organizer

19:15 Apache Cassandra in the Real World
For always available, high performance applications, companies such as Spotify, Reddit, and Netflix use Apache Cassandra.  This talk will provide an introduction to Cassandra from an architectural, ops, and development perspective.  It will also cover a few specific use cases to provide an idea of where and how it is used.

Speaker: Jeremy Hanna, DataStax

Jeremy works as a support engineer for DataStax, helping customers with Apache Cassandra, Apache Hadoop, and Apache Solr across Europe.  Prior to joining DataStax, he worked as a systems architect at the Dachis Group to design and implement analytics pipelines using Cassandra and Hadoop.  Jeremy has been a contributor to the Cassandra project since 2010.

20:00 Combining Apache Cassandra and Hadoop
Apache Cassandra is a highly available low-latency database for Big Data. Apache Hadoop is the de-facto standard for general Big Data storage and processing. This presentation provides a short introduction into the best practices of combining these two systems.

Speaker: Zoltan Prekopcsák, co-founder & CEO, Radoop LLC.

He is the co-founder of Radoop, a big data analytics startup that develops a graphical user interface for doing analytics on Hadoop. Previously, he has been a researcher in data mining and has been collaborating with renowned scientists from Canada and the Czech Republic. He has been involved in data mining projects in various fields like telecommunications, financial modelling, and neuroscience. He has been a data scientist at Secret Sauce Partners, Inc. where he created a patented technology for predicting customer behavior.

We have received a box of Cassandra-related goodies from DataStax as a gift to our meetup members.

There's a couple of T-shirts (different sizes), stickers, and a few other items. We will distribute these on a first-come-first-served base, one item per attendee.
