Talk 1: Big Data – Big Impact on Insurance?

The talk will cover Munich Re’s, just recently (August 2015), established program “GRIP” (Global Rapid Innovation Program) which will deal with all sort of Big Data / Analytics PoCs / Pilots. Munich Re furthermore defines and implements the so-called “BI Lab” which consists of HANA, SAS and, most important, a profound Hadoop-Stack. An extensive data lake / reservoir is on the map, in addition to the already existing structured “one version of the truth” data platform. The talk will also cover Munich Re’s bi-modal view of IT: There is a high focus on getting things done much quicker than in the past…

Talk 2: Batch & Stream: Does Big Data really has 2 faces?

The talk will offer a brief overview of existing solutions for performing batch and stream processing such as Apache Spark and Apache Flink. The main questions answered are: What are the major differences between the 2 paradigms? and If migrating legacy processing between paradigms is feasible? More, the advantages, as well as the limitations, of different aspects(e.g., windows, events, global functions and batches, time types, etc.) will be depicted.
