BYOB: Build Your Own Biosphere

BYOB: Build Your Own Biosphere

  • Date: Sat, September 10th
  • Time: 1-4pm
  • Class fee: $40

We’ll make DIY ecosystems, fully self-supporting and sealed from the outside world, with some plants, animals, and a few drops of pond scum, in a Mason jar. These same biospheres sell in airline catalogs for hundereds of dollars. We’ll also review other closed-environment life support systems (CELSS), and discuss a new project to build a gigantic biosphere. You can bring your own container, or use one provided. Class starts promptly at 1p.

Special note: A BBC film crew will be at the lab on Saturday doing interviews (for a documentary on synthetic biology), so class participants must consent to be filmed.

Lots of fun! Seemed to be a great family science opportunity as well - lots of kids with parental units.

    * Raymonds talk was excellent. His prep was good, kept my attention and my 9 yr old daughters.
    * the lab was well prepared, and was able to accomplish the project with satisfaction. Little chaotic during middle of activity (maybe a 1 page handout with instructions would have helped). But was all fun.
    * The people attendees/organizers were nice and we felt comfortable.

I would do future events again at BioCurious. Probably dont have enough free time to warrant joining lab (my day job demanding), but lab/events like this area just right for me (and if applicable my daughter). Would be willing to pay upwards $100 per person for well prepared/constructed labs that require more materials or length (or if involved say 2 separate attendances if very involved).

Very nice presentation, and I was veru pleased to see so many youngsters there.
I enjoyed the project, and the chance to meet personally with so many talented people.

It was a fun experience, and it was nice that we got to go home with something.

My son attended this to get help with his Biosphere project. The staff were extremely knowledgeable and helpful. It was a great experience.

I would sure hope not! We shouldn't really even need the lab space for this, so the only things any kids may be exposed to is naked shrimp, and maybe some off-color jokes.

So, unless you happen to be one of those people who is of the opinion that a bit of science is deleterious to young impressionable minds, I would assume this is open to all. ;-)

Did I mention that we'll be giving away Spongebob Squarepants-themed biosphere schwag to selected attendees?
