Art from the Biocurious

by Marnia Johnston and Kathryn Gritt

In this talk Marnia and Kathryn will discuss the work of a broad range of artists (and scientist-artists) who use living organisms as the inspiration and means by which they make work. Topics will include: genetic engineering, tissue culture, bacteria, cloning, synthetic ecologies, and emergent behavior. They will also include in the talk subjects that mimic life systems: vivaria, "smart" buildings, robots and cyborgs. As artistic work with living beings and life science practices sets in motion ethical, social and aesthetic inquiries, the talk will conclude with a discussion that considers the practicalities and implications of the artists? and researchers? work. Questions we will consider: How are artists interpreting the ideas surrounding re-engineered life? How does the work go beyond representation? Does the work accurately reflect the research? Why or why not? At what stage does life become alive? What is a 'body'? How are artists answering the question, ?what does it mean to be human??

Location is tentatively Hacker Dojo. I will post as soon as I have confirmation of the space.
