BACKGROUND
The invention and rise of Bitcoin has fundamentally challenged the way we think about money. It has also demonstrated great potential to disrupt the payment industry and has eroded the government monopoly over the creation of money. Where will the cryptocurrency revolution lead us next? What are the implications for traditional business structures? Enter BitShares, a cryptocurrency platform which aims at shaping the future of business by building the technology necessary to power and operate decentralized autonomous corporations (DACs).
A DAC is a software entity that, like a traditional company, earns money for its shareholders. Unlike a traditional company, it operates autonomously on a blockchain; it requires no board of directors or CEO to accomplish its goals. Shares can be transferred from person to person over the internet without any third party brokers. The corporation exists entirely as a decentralized transaction ledger maintained by a network of individual computers owned by regular people all over the world.
CASE STUDY: BITSHARES MUSIC AND PEERTRACKS
Far from being at the theoretical stage, entrepreneurs are already creating Decentralized Autonomous Corporations that provide useful services and aspire at generating very real profits for their share holders. Cedric Cobban recently founded the BitShares Music blockchain, a DAC which attempts to harness the power of peer-to-peer networks for talent discovery and music retail. Like all DACs, BitShares Music is composed of units called Notes, whose sale is being used as a method to finance the development of the corporation. Buyers of Notes will eventually be able to trade and sell these units.
